Importing European UTM WGS84 maps

Does anyone have any advice or tips on importing Austrian maps?

Does anyone have any advice or tips on importing Austrian maps? I  have scanned and imported/calibrated part of a map. The map uses  UTM cordinates. I converted them to Longitude and Latitude (degrees decimal) using a web tool and entered them into Quo as WGS84 degrees. The map is imported but is skewed. When I tell Quo to display UTM WGS84 the two spots on the map which I used for calibration show the correct coordinates but elsewhere shows the wrong coordiates when I click on the map. I have only just mugged up on UTM, long lat etc so it's probably a simple error.   I doesn't seem possible to calibrate the map using UTM corodiates directy without conversion.   I would be grateful for any pointers!

I can't speak for Quo - but in Oziexplorer you import the scanned maps then calibrate them using at least 4 calibration points. Using the corners is the most logical - make sure you don't use the same Lat or Long lines for more than one point.

This of course might be of no use to you at all...

thank you, ed h.

Quo needs 2 calibration points. I entered them at opposite corners.  I have imported scanned maps of the UK successfully. the problem seems to be with the UTM WGS84 map referencs.

If the map looks skewed, you may be using the wrong UTM zone. Check here

What's the protection of the maps you're using?  Is it one that uses true distance (e.g. OS) or one that uses true bearings?  Is the lat/long grid regular and rectangular, or are the lines curved?  What projection are you trying to achieve with your calibration?

For instance, data from the Shuttle Radar Togography Mission uses angle-based 'pixels', and has to be re-projected to a true-distance grid such as OS.  The resulting terrain map looks something like:

thank you, Jim

I am using the correct UTM zone
