Not strictly relevant for walking etc but Nokia maps are now free to download.

Ive been trying it out on my N95 and they seem to provide a good basic driving route planning application.

The maps appear to be up to date which they should be as Nokia now own Navteq who supply maps to a lot of the other route planning software.

Could be the beginning of the end for TomTom etc.

Been using mine for 2 weeks now, not took a wrong turn yet.

With that and viewranger on my 5800 the world is my oyster, well the north of england for starters.

on the subject of viewranger twiglegs, did you buy disc or download ?

and since you have been very vocal on forums about the 5800. i would like to say,

i had the chance to use side by side with the iphone for 2 weeks.

if money were no object, i would still go for the 5800.

I've got maps preloaded on my 5800 but it won't do the driving route bit. Have you got a link please?

Yoda, I'm not Twiglegs , but I got the disc, in case I had some catastrophe with my phone or my PC, I still have the maps on disc.

Ta.

Yes. I think i would be inclined to buy a disc with my luck with phones and computers. Wet weather destroyed my last 5800 . Tip. If you even suspect your phone might be , or will get wet. Take out the battery quick.

Bugger this! Spent a couple of hours going in circles, udated my software updater, then my firmware. Spent ages trying to download the maps to my PC first but the links on the Nokia page don't work. I updated my Nokia maploader, then updated my maps on my phone, and now it tells me to buy a license.

Proper fed up I am.

Sean.

Just ignore the buy a licence bit. It will work OK.  At least it did on mine.

19/02/2010 at 17:00

Nope, it works for a second or so. The the license bit comes up, I say "No Ta" to buying a license and the route disappears. I've tried downloading direct to my phone from here

http://www.nokia.co.uk/apps-and-services/ovi-maps/downloads?lid=nav_navq1_link_getthelatest_other_na&ca=navq1&t=nav

And I've tried downloading to my PC from the same page but it keeps taking me in circles. Is their site having a hissy fit or am I pressing the wrong buttons?

why not copy the entire card first. then if pear shaped it does go. then you can always

copy back onto card

did you find this nokia map page with the 5800 specific bit halfway down

I spent most of yesterday on that site , using some colourful language. I believe I have found the answer though, the phone memory ( not card ) is virtually full   .  I'm giving up.
