After over 1 year of looking at various makes and models of mapping GPS I have finally plumped for the Sat Map Active 10 from Amazon.

The main reason for the time was due to Memory Map - I liked the idea of having a Memory Map system so that I could load my maps onto the unit. However, IMHO I do not believe they executed the design of the units that well and the updates applied did not really fulfill the potential.

In the end it was a close run thing between Garmin and Sat Map but in the end the price for the Sat Map from Amazon was the thing that swung it. Now waiting (not so patiently) for it to be delivered!

Took it out today for a 14-15k walk.

Very impressed with performance, I have never seen so many sats locked on before!

It was in my hand during the whole trip with the screen constantly on so I could review the screen in different light conditions and generally play with the unit. Got to say that even with out the sun filter selected the display was readable all day.

After being out for 3.5 hours the supplied rechargeable battery level only changed from solid green battery to a battery with four green bars!

Now to put in place a device to attach to the rucksack something akin to what Parky has done.
