Um... well I'm 17 (so nearly a student), and live in Malvern which is fairly close (same county), if that's of any help at all. I don't get to go out as much as I'd like to, but if the transport is available, then trip to scrambling places would be a good laugh. Dunno what u think. Altho I'm not for walking off hangovers. What I wanna do is bad enough, without the extra hassle.

Ben...Does one HAVE to be a student???

What about someone with a car! I don't ride, but when I can get a pass from Mrs F I do like a good walk/scramble.

I'm in stafford btw.

Sounds great, yeah im interested and car would be helpful thanks. I work sundays <bugger> but always up for sat's. No alex you don't have to be a student.

Routes, well erm theres snowdonia in my back garden almost so thats a possability, also i don't think the peaks are that far by train.

Shall we check the map and forcast and try a meetup somewhere??

25 days late with post. oh hum.

If you ever want to come up to Snowy, drop me a line. I'm out with the uni walking club every Sat and you'd be welcome to come. Occasionally we do our own stuff & you'd be welcome then too

Ben drop us a line some point deolney@aol.com as I'm in the South wales Valleys at Uni (trefforest) so Shrewsbury is relatively easy to get to!
Snowdon also sounds good1

it does. i was looking for some of the less popular walk round snowdonia. Any ideas??? i hate walking up an edge, snout to rucksac all the way, only to find a load of japs on the top, jabbering down their sony fones. plus the $h£@p nicking ure sarnies

Moel Siabod...top walk, top views. It's a bit of a sort of "morning after hill" I think.

Nice and quiet, it's a bit off the beaten track for a lot of people.

Go in the week, then everywhere except perhaps Snowdon will be empty. And if you climb Snowdon by Rhyd-Ddu (the easiest path) or the ridge that runs south to Yr Aran (Allt Madeyrn or sommat) you'd be unlucky to pass people even on a weekend.

Northern Carneddau is usually quiet despite having some of the best walking, too.

Nantlle Ridge, the Y Garn end by Rhyd-Ddu, that can be glorious in sunny weather and again quiet.

Mynydd Mawr and Moel Siabod tend to be too short walks for me, though the panaroma of Snowdonia from Moel Siabod is probably the best. Lug a big camera up there on a clear snowy day and you won't regret it!

did it when i was about 8 i think, found it rather knackaring back then, must try it again, Must get out into snowdonia again, i seem to head north all the time (peaks, lakes, scotland) when some great walking is so close. im mad i think!

Dan. Your at Bangor Uni aren't you? I'm thinking about going there.

My dad isn't too sure though. He reckon's that at Rhyl, they really hate the English, and they are reallt rough, and would come along to Bangor to start fights with the English Students there. He said this after the Home Secratary gave police there extra powers, as it's so rough. What do you think about that? I reckon it's b*ll*cks, but he's is a sad twat who wants me to go to Aberystwyth. Have you heard of any trouble? Or is it just as rough as the next city?

Cheers

1. Rhyl is a very long way from Bangor.

2. There has never been any, any, fights between English and Welsh in Bangor. In fact Bangor is probably more than half English with the uni and all the commercial developments there.

3. Bangor is actually a very, very, safe city. I've been horribly drunk round there but you'd never worry about it. I come from Reading which a big scary city where people get murdered etc. (we've got these 'special powers' too, not sure what exactly they are tho) but even muggings are unheard of round Bangor. Lot of stuff gets nicked thogh as it is a pretty poor area. Fashion is still in the late 80s, all the local kids where Addidas and Le Coq Sportif tracksuits. Sad. But among the students (one third of the population) there's a real sense of community; it's very relaxed, easy going and welcoming.

4. Bangor rocks. On another thread best 'uni for outdoors' was mentioned, but nowhere is like Bangor. I live ten minutes drive from the bottom of the nearest 900m mountain. I also sail on the Menai Straits, ride horses nearby, cycle on Angelsey, climb or boulder on great rock, indoor climb at a *huge* wall, and I have mates who canoe on white water or beaches, who surf, who mtb on proper trails, every weekend, without going away, just a few minutes drive from Bangor. No other uni in the UK comes even remotely close. It is very, very good, and I really, really, don't want to leave.

5. We have lots of good pubs but no really decent nightclubs, so if a clubbing type night life is important don't come here. The pissed/off bored students you get round Bangor are those who only leave their rooms at night, bit of a shock when they realise that we only have three night clubs, and two are shite.

If you've got anymore Qs fire away.

I like Bangor too, and have been there several times...never had any bother!

(too right about the clubs...when we were over there the other week some chaps tried to get into a "club" but were told there was no entry after 11pm!

Dan do you ever get across the Straits to the climbing wall at "Indefatigable" in Llanfair? It's quite good...and is very cheap!

No Rhyl on the other hand...too close to Liverpool too full of scally scousers! (I'd like to point out that for legal reasons not all Liverpudlians are scally scousers...it's just a lot of them DO go to Rhyl for holidays and for nicking sprees!)

A few of my mates are in the Officers Training Corps and have been to Indy, but I've yet too. What are the rules on entry? Never got a clear answer on whether its mil only, mil+mates or anyone. Do you know any better?

They let you out at night did they? Which pubs did you got to? We might have been in the same one!!

LOL...went to one near the uni...can't remember the name...there was a chinky nearby and a chippy over the road I think. I only stayed for one as I was driving the guys into town for a "big night out"...aka a wet wednesday evening!

I thought that the wall was open to civvies too...There's a shop in there which surely couldn't survive if it was restricted to just Milittary people. I'll have a look for the phone number of the place when I'm back at work and give them a bell...I'll let you know! It is worth a visit if you can blag an entry mind you. About 30+ routes (about 10-15m tall) some top ropes, some available for leading, and a fairly large bouldering area too.
