I have some directions for all you lovely people.

As you drive from Betws-y-Coed towards Capel Curig, there is a lay-by on the right just before Pont Cyfyng. There is some kind of B&B with a cafe at the lay-by. You will need to park there at about 735571. If you pass a side road on your left and a phone box on your right you have gone too far.

There is a gate across a track and a style alongside. You will need to climb that style and go up the track (NW) for 100m. The barn is on your left. I need to get the key to the person who will likely arrive first. (Who will that be?) The track continues 50m further to the NLMC cottage. If you go there, there will likely be friendly faces there to redirect you.

I have not stayed at the Barn but I have looked inside and seen mattresses and some cooking stuff and a stove. Its lovely if a little basic.

Please try and bringa log just to make organsiation simpler.

There are three nice places to eat in capel, 2 pubs and a hotel. I have eaten well in them all. As we are a big group we might want to split and for Saturday evening meal, we may not all get in the same one.

I am easy on routes, and again we might do better to divvy into groups. I would suggest we let the weather be our guide.

Kev, me, Bev and Mart will probs get there mid afternoon ish. We were going to lunch in Betwys and visit the gear shops.

Don't worry too much about logs - we can bring a couple of bags up.

we have a surplus opf £2 per person times meeters.

If we do not need to buy a bag of logs, I will give it all to Ogwen MR.

The pubs at Capel. IIRC one now has a kind of restaurant feel to it and the other was wet out back where the building is built onto the hillside with bare rock for a back wall. That second one was being run down when I was last there. Anyone know if it had new owners and is refurbished now??

I might be wrong about the pubs though as it was about 3 years ago now.

Weevil - AM I right in reading the directions as there is a bit of a walk uphill from the road where the cars are to be parked to the barn?? So I'll need to pack light and in a sack that I can carry up there?

07/02/2012 at 10:49

a bit of a walk?

its 100m (maybe a little more), easy, how much stuff are you thinking?

07/02/2012 at 10:58
Aw, come on, Weevil, if you look closely at the map, it's at least 150m with about 25m of ascent.
07/02/2012 at 11:10
can you apply Naismith's to that please?
07/02/2012 at 11:17
I work on 4kph, and at 165m with 25m of ascent, we're talking 4 minutes. Though that will change depending on TP's level of fitness and how many crates of beer he's carrying.
07/02/2012 at 11:29

maybe we need to factor in his deterioration on route.

07/02/2012 at 11:32
Yes, though the additional weight (in beer) that he's carrying may also diminish.

My level of fitness has been deteriorating for a few years now. And with the beer idea, that I hadn't thought of BTW so thanks for that, I reckon it will take me at least a couple of hours. I mean I have to drink the beer first as I'm too lazy to carry them all that way.

Is it usual camping barn kit? Mat, sleeping bag, etc.??

Anyway, I'm into my lightweight kit but unfortunately too much of it so I might struggle getting up there.

So K8, are you going to be there for this meet? Just so we know to bring more logs to get a roaring fire going 24/7 for you!!

Is it the place I've circled in red here?

I know the parking place you mean, and that seems to fit - except that I could swear that track runs NE, not NW!

BTW, Snowdonia's easily driveable for me, so there's a chance I may come out to join in one day, more likely the Saturday. But it'll be a fairly last minute decision.
