Unfortunately I can't make either of the two meets in Snowdonia in July but I am planning to head to Ogwen for the bank holiday weekend (Friday and Saturday nights) - I must be mad! I'm planning on doing the Cwm Bochlwyd horseshoe (Tryfan, Bristly Ridge and Gribin ridge) and also hopefully Crib Lem on Carnedd Dafydd, both Grade 1*** scrambles. I will be camping in Gwern Gof Uchaf. Anyone is free to join me if interested.

Crib Lem good call for a bank holiday, nice and quite that side of the hill.

Dan

How do they compare to Sharp Edge on Blencathra?
As you have no doubt gathered I haven't done a lot of scrambling and was thinking of heading to the Lakes this weekend but I am always game for a laugh.

Hi Frank,

It would be good to have you along - I could even give you that CD! If Sharp Edge was your first proper scramble I certainly don't think you acquited yourself badly at all ...

I've not done these routes before myself but I believe that they are probably somewhat less exposed, although the technical difficulty must be similar I guess. Certainly the North Ridge of Tryfan and Bristly Ridge are very popular introductory scrambles, while the Gribin ridge is supposed to mostly be a walk with some scrambling (easier than Hall's Fell ridge I guess). As for Crib Lem - it looks fairly airy in Steve Ashton's guidebook but not unduly so. Can anyone else comment?

The weather is not looking promising anywhere in the UK for Saturday at least (rain) but since my better half is away I'm inclined to head over there anyway and brave the conditions.

Typical! Digital ceefax last night had rain everywhere - looks like they're not so certain now.

It's always sunny in Scotland...
25/05/2004 at 18:12
...except when its raining
25/05/2004 at 18:25
Yes but in summer the rains that little bit warmer.

Dan I will confirm later on in the week

Sounds sensible to me Frank ...

Yes, bank hols w\ends have to be Scotland to avoid all the crowds. Haven't been to the Lakes or N Wales over bank hol w\end for years because of that.

"bank hols w\ends have to be Scotland to avoid all the crowds" - I think the concept of "crowding" must be relative. Scotland gets a whole lot busier every time there's an English Bank Holiday.

Mind you, it's not like we haven't got the space up here :o)

Yes, but even when it rains in Scotland Hamish, it's beautiful. And it keep the wee beasties down!

Weather's not looking too bad now for either Saturday or Sunday in Snowdonia so I'll be at Gwern Gof Uchaf by around 9pm tonight (traffic permitting).

This w/e we will be mostly in Dent, camping at www.highlaning.co.uk
and spending Saturday night in the Sun Inn with their excellent pub food.
Daytime will be spent bimbling round Kingsdale, Deepdale, Barbondale etc with the occasional ascent of such beauties as the Great Coombe.

Anyone is welcome to join us, it's a nice little site close to the pub.

Well, went to High Laning and...
Oh. My. God.
It's normally such a lovely quiet site but I'll never visit it on a Bank Hol again.
Chav Central.

Packed to the rafters with caravans and 'family' tents and hordes (HORDES I tell you) of screaming brats. Not an exaggeration. We got back from the pub on Saturday night and they were still screaming (not screaming cos they were crying, just allowed permanently to shout and scream). I was knacked and went straight to sleep but Bob went for a walk on his own until very late when it was quieter.

At 5am on Sunday morning we heard from the next tent (with 5 kids under 5 in it) an adult male voice saying "you can make as much noise as you like now, it's morning". And the screaming and shouting at a very high pitch started again.
This was just ONE family, there were dozens of families full of kids, all allowed to roam and scream all day and much of the evening.

As you can imagine, we left early....
