Well, I'll try again if I'm not working.

Got any rough plans, South Moor is quite a big playground?

VERY rough plans -

start around Hexworthy, Skir Hill, Huntingdon Warren, Erme Area, the West for Saturday night.

Possibly and only possibly camp around Nuns Cross or Ditsworthy /Shavercombe area

Sunday, Cuckoo Rock,Crazy Well, track back via Whitewors and Swincombe

But happy to be guided by locals

Sounds good.  By "around Hexworthy" do you mean The Forest Inn?

Ter Hill/Skir Hill/Aune Head is quite a lot of b'stard grass or bog.  Unless you really want to tick it off for some reason I'd suggest going a bit further east maybe Ryders/Snowdon then loop around Huntingdon clockwise and up the Avon over the clapper and up to Red Lake.  Erme Head is nice for a bimble.  I'd then suggest Grim's Grave - quite an impressive cist and down the Langcombe.  The Langcombe has camping options too.  Shavercombe I don't think is so good, despite Hen Tor being a great place to sit and have a cuppa that part of the Plym isn't soo good for pitches.  I've camped a few times near Drizzlecombe.

Day 2 dependant on where you stop to get back quickly take jobbers towards Eylesbarrow but push N before you get to it and go to Combeshead Tor  then take or leave Cuckoo Rock.  The stone row N of Combshead is pretty impressive if you like that sort of thing though not as good as the one you'd see on day 1 at Drizzlecombe, worth a visit though (imho).  Then you could go to Crazywell (it was on local tv this morning, a bunch of people did an organised swim in it yesterday, even had a lifeguard).

Fm Crazywell follow the Demport Leat rather than the track to Nun's, it hits it soon enough anyway.  The pic of Burrator from Crazywell Cross is a dartmoor classic (if you can see anything).  If you're in a rush or the weather is carp you can skip Crazywell and go straight to Nun's cross from the stone row.  Obviously if you camp at Nun's Crossday 2 will probably be even shorter.

Another worthwhile addition but which would make it longer would be to go from the Ditsworthy area to Sheepstor then Cuckoo Rock and on.  This could take in the stone circle, plus Sheepstor is one of the best Tors on the Moor with good vies over Burrator.

Anyway some food for thought.

Cheers Wurz

yes I did mean the Forest Inn,

Tir etc was only an idea as a 'direct ish' but yep can be a bit little

As for the swim, I have been for a quick dip previously but as I was on my todd, didnt venture to far.

But weather permitting could be an option with dry bags as life rings

Plenty of time to plan over the next weeks

Bummer - have wedding!  But sadly there's a small chance it may be postponed, so who knows.  My stamping ground, too.  If not, have a great time.

Re swim, its hard to beat Red Lake for a serious swim.  How big a pool do you want???  And it's kinda deep...  Possibly well over 100 ft - certainly the shaft for the pumps was extended to 132 ft.  Sadly, DNP have had the last visible bit of the shaft covered over with concrete blocks - you used to be able to see the top rungs of the ladder.

Unfortunatley, I won't be able to attend as I'm on holiday that week in Cornwall so lets hope for nice weather for all of us. Have a great time anyway.

If I can swap saturday on-call and I'm still alive by then (having been pushed out of a plane the weekend before) could someone put me on the list please (usual excuse, OM website doesn't work properly in Safari, so no quoting for me!)

Ok, plans move on

Friday night stop at either Plume of Feathers site or on the moor at the back.

Mrs Chewie has said that she is thinking of coming and to meet vet you all and make sure you are a bunch of hard drinker party goers , but wont walk much or at all with us, so I am proposing we camp near Nuns Cross, possibly with West End of the leat tunnel.

Can you let me know if you want to camp at the Plume (£6.95 PP)  as I need to pay a deposit

I will post the outlined route in the next day or so

Dude, I have never known anyone pay a deposit for some backpacking tents at the PoF - just rock, up, pitch and pay at the bar - honestly, trust me. If you are heading for Nun's Cross there is a small area to the RHS (as you look at the front door) that is spot on for multiple tents to pitch - it's like a small sheltered enclosure from byegone days.

The moorland immediately to the south of the PoF is crap for pitching except for a couple of spots around South Hessary.

I hope that helps

Edited to add - this is the pitch at NCF:

Ah, but FB, you weren't on the June '07 micro-meet when most of the campsite was taken up with an international geocachers' meet!

And you think by some quirk of probability that they shall have booked a repeat visit to the same site on the same date?

The website seemed to make out that was the case, but just phoned and you dont need too

Nuns Cross is a popular spot most of the year hence trying to be a little bit away from it.

Camping at Nun's cross having left PoF? Not very far. Are you planning a massive game of hide and seek in Whiteworks then?
