Dunno what to suggest. I've never had a guru or a car, but I'm coping!

Before I took to the hills all on my lonesome as a teenager, I seem to remember just going out with a couple of pals, sticking a couple of tents in a clearing in a nearby wood, and living off baked beans. It all seemed so simple!

Plenty of OM'ers over that way Simon, have a look in the meets section, there's walks in the Peaks coming up and i'm sure they'd be happy to have you along, might even make one or two myself..

Backpackers Club is pretty active in that area - they welcome beginners & do car share or use public transport to get to meets.

Milly is organising 2 weekend day trips on 11th & 12th of August in the Peak District. I've put myself down for one or both, depending on transport. In the meantime I'll peruse the websites/blogs you've all kindly suggested.

Need a guru? Bedderz is your man ...

Seriously, I reckon practice makes perfect. Camping (wild, rough, or campsite; backpacking or from a car) is something you pick up by doing it. A few overnighters in your local campsite will, if nothing else, help you determine what you need to take and what you can leave behind.

That said, you'll also pick up plenty of tips and techniques by going out with other people so watch the Meets section.

If you had been blonde and femal Simon, you'd be fighting off offers...

Maybe a good Backpackers Club bash to start with would be their Treasure Hunt meet over the weekend 14-16th September. With no car, you just need to get a train to Windermere, bus to Ambleside, then change onto the bus for Langdale. Even if it's late and the Langdale bus has finished, you can walk to Skelwith Bridge and find the campsite at Tarn Foot, near Loughrigg Tarn.

Apparently, potential gurus will be propping up the bar of the Talbot at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel on the Friday evening. On this meet, it's entirely up to individual members whether to stay on the campsite, or to spend Saturday night wild-camping. Click here... then click 'diary'... then click 'what happens'.

I've allready joined the Back packers club via Fb. More Guru's than you can poke a walking pole at. I may do the OM Snowdonia weekend, as well as the Malverns walk. Thanks all.

OK... then you might have to use that walking pole to beat all the gurus off... or you'll end up encumbered with more advice than you can bear!
