Next Meet-Up...

Scotland at Easter

Hi everyone. We were talking a while back about the possibility of hitting Scotland for a Meet-Up in December.

Unfortunately the timing's not looking good for me, not least because I may not be in the country at the time - always a drawback - plus Scottish conditions are so fickle this early in the season that there's every chance of going all the way up to Fort Bill and being rained on for two days. And of course if we have a pre-arranged date, it's hard to change it.

That's not to say that people can't go under their own steam anyway. Of course you'll not get to see my new hat or people doing handstands in the wind, but both experiences are over-rated anyway.

What I propose is that we pick out a venue and date for early next year, possibly the Lakes - Wasdale? - or maybe the Dales for say, January or February.

On the Scottish front, I'm open to the idea of mabe fixing on a weekend in, say, March, when conditions are likely to me more stable (viz - there might be some snow) and look at getting a bunkhouse for a long weekend to make the long journey oop north.

What do you all reckon? Like I said, people can obviously arrange a Scottish weekend earlier if they want to, which is, after all, what the forum's all about.

all sounds good to me
Unless it's an absolutely rubbish forecast I'll still be going up to scotland on the weekend in question although I won't decide east or west until close to the time. I'll be doing a few munros, happy to share/meet anyone else

The Dales sounds good...but I'm happy to go anywhere! (except maybe Scotland in winter, cos frankly, I don't have the gear for it!)

My vote is Horton-In-Ribblesdale or similar for a good go at The Three Yorkshire Peaks! But I'd be happy to do some tramping about in Wasdale. (...A certain red-haired prize winning journalist wrote a great piece about it in Trail a while back!)

As for a time...Well December is good(ish) first weekend, and third weekend are clear (the good lady has exams and stuff over the 8-14 Dec). Any time in January is a non-starter for me (same reasons).

...but I meant to add that February is really good!

Alex, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks is a great walk, but I'd have thought you would be pushed to finish it in daylight in the middle of winter.
Night navigation could be fun though!

Lloyd, when was the last time you did it.
navigation is not a problem, you just need to be able to stay on a boardwalk or keep to a 3m wide crushed limestone path.
I first did it in 1972 when you did need to navigate in 6hours 18mins.
having done it a few times in the intervening years I did it with a gang of 'hill virgin' mates about 4 years ago. The paths had obviously become so degraded that the park authority had done what it could but the result is a motorway.
If anyone still wants to do it then it can be done VERY comfortably in 9 hours

Neil, only done it the once, dawdled around with a few mates on a warm summer day in June a year ago. Agreed the path for 97% of the route is so obvious.
Sure 9hrs is ceratinly possible, but in December some of that time's likely to be in the dark.

BTW Anyone know if the £ Peak route's fully F&M closure free at the mo?

The Dales still seems to have patches of closure, see the links on the last foot and mouth update. There hasn't been a confirmed case since the end of September and a lot of the restrictions on the movement of livestock have been relaxed across northern England.

See this page for details on Dales access. In the light of closures, I'm more stoked for the Lakes right now, but by next year things may have resolved themselves, though the media keeps running stuff on the potential for new outbreaks.

Lloyd,
I'm hurt that you thought we dawdled around the 3 peaks route last June. Some of us were going at full pelt :). I carry my 3 pks time card with pride.

I would stick to "south of the border stuff" during winter then if you don't like startin'/finishin in the dark, sorting a few trips to Scotland over winter if anyones interested, no dates confirmed as yet, dark starts AND finishes if the conditions are right!
13/11/2001 at 18:44
don't mind the dark...but I just don't have the gear, (and haven't the cash) for serious winter stuff just yet.

You don't need much, what size feet have you got?

Size 8
13/11/2001 at 22:09
...and it's NOT true what they say about feet sizes and other parts of the anatomy!
13/11/2001 at 22:28
Jon's puttin some gear together for you, he's got one fleece sleeve, half a walking pole and a mitt! send all donations to........ you'll be kitted up for New Year ......should look interesting!
13/11/2001 at 22:33
Sounds like a pair of Troll Jesters. Did people really wear those in the old days daddy?
13/11/2001 at 23:04
Jon as also added to the list, a pair of trousers found frozen in a bog on top of kinder
14/11/2001 at 08:18
I checked the pockets, there was no wallet
14/11/2001 at 10:02
The trousers scared me. Alex, if it comes down to it late next year, I can possibly lend you some winter boots and crampons.

Does anyone feel adventurous enough to book a long weekend in March now? There's a good bunkhouse in Corpach, just round the corner from Fort William that'd make an ideal base for the Ben and Glencoe and is actually - shock, horror - comfortable and even luxurious.

March good time to go. Days getting longer, good chance of some snow etc.
