I'll be out between the above having a play in the snow (yeah right) probably a couple of days in Wales just after crimbo, then in the Lakes for New Year (ish)if anyone wants to take part in such silliness.

and folks still going up at 3pm, without crampons, (either on their feet or packs), no axes, and guess what......... the helecopter was out by 4!
09/12/2002 at 20:52
But there's no snow on the valley floor, I don't need crampies today, etc, etc, etc.
09/12/2002 at 20:52
Hmmm and when does it get dark in December doctor?
09/12/2002 at 21:07
You don't actually need crampons in the sort of soft snow which is all we've had this last weekend. They're just something to trip over or to get blunted on rocks when it's like this. Crampons are for ice or hardpack.

Or sliding a point up your thumbnail while rummaging aroung in the box they're in. Bloody crampons too!

I once watched some old maniac tottering around the Lakes on 12-point crampons when the only snow around consisted of isolated patches of sogginess around two inches deep. It was frightening, particularly the way his ankles bowed outwards with every tottering step. I can only assume that he was confused.

Dave, might be on for a couple of days between Xmas and New Year in Wales, but depends on conditions. As you well know anything climbable is like hens' teeth that early in the season. Also depends on the redhead and her frightening mountain urges.

Never run your thumb accidentally along a Predator adze while trying to stow it in its nice, nylon bag. Ouch.

Dave

Thanks for the message - are you in Stafford itself?

As for idiots without the right equipment: I saw this bloke in a red and white fur lined coat heading off on a sleigh pulled by reindeer on December 24th. No lights, no warm drinks. Last sighting of him was somewhere over Norway/Finland late at night. I just hope he's got BMC insurance!

Yes Rob, sadly, I live in Stafford, Joan, the stuff on Snowdon was mainly a small coating of watery snow which had partially melted, then frozen to give a really loveley slippy surface, I think, judging by the number of folks who were falling on their arse, the use of crampons, was "advisable", we used ours for the start of the descent, it may seem like overkill, but it stopped any of our party finding it difficault standing up, unlike many people around us

John - I'm from Stafford, but now in Brum after many a year spent in deepest darkest Cardiff. If you are out and about over xmas then e-mail me as I'll be at the folks!

Hmmm... I was thinking of joining Dave for the weekend, a drive share will make it more cost effective and therefore more attractive...

We - me and the redhead - should be out over Christmas / New Year but no firm plans yet. Dave, what are you planning in terms of accommodation in the Lakes?
