Hi all,
I'm a sort of 'born again' walker/rambler, (no religious connotations intended). I was a very keen twenty something, having conquered the 3 Peaks challenge and the Ten Tors race, as well as umpteen grueling marathons (best time - 3 hrs 11 mins in the army) and cross country affairs.
As a middle-aged singleton I'm starting to get back into walking and scrambling, initially as a way to cope with divorce, but then more of an adjunct to my existing keep fit regime of rowing, cycling and swimming. I go out with the Ramblers and U3A most weeks, which is great as I get to be chauffeured around to places in the Peak District I wouldn't ordinarily visit. They are a little slow for my liking, but it's nice to network and make new friends instead of charging around the countryside like a mountain goat on Prozac.
When I'm not chatting on group walks I head off on my own, armed with my OS Map and day sack. I do plan to try a walking holiday in this country and would welcome any suggestions from the OM crowd. My fitness level is pretty good for my age and I walk between 20 and 30 miles a week (at a brisk pace). I am contemplating buying a one man tent for the complete 'wilderness experience', but for now I'm keen to sample as many walks and terrains as possible.
In an hour or so I'm off to Rowsley/Stanton Moor with the U3A.
