Haven't done one of these yet...

Hi,

Thought I may as well do one of these...

I'm Ed, just finishing sixth form mid-July, then going to Cambridge (hopefully!) in October to do Engineering. I live in the North East in a village near (ish) to Durham.

I like backpacking, walking and recently, I've got into climbing. I've done Gold D of E, help out a local scouts group and am trying to get in touch with the local D of E group to volunteer there as well, it's harder than you think!

In July, I'm going to Venezuela for a month on a World Challenge Expedition then when I get back (and all my earning's go into my pocket!) I'll be getting out much more and heading off to the shops...already got a fair bit on my list to buy, mind...

So prepare for loads of forums about kit in August!

Oi, you must be in the middle of your A levels, ed, get back to your revision!!

Welcome aboard, sure you'll have lots of opportunities to do fun outdoors stuff whilst you're at university!

Venezuela - lucky you. Where are you going? We had 5 weeks there a couple of years ago. Definitely not a tourist destination but one of the most rewarding of our trips.

PS HI !!

Welcome, Ed.

We love it when Kate gets all stern

Hi and welcome.

When you get to Uni, join the Mountaineering, climbing, hillwalking club, or all of them.

Not only will you get away often, most outdoor shops have 'club nights', where you can buy kit at least 10% if not more cheaper.

Don't worry Kate, il be on with work soon!
Trouble with Cambridge is it's all flat so there'll be nothing interesting...should have sorted out my priorities first!

Cathy, are you a World Challenge leader then? I keep on forgetting the places we're going but I know we're definitely doing a big summit (I think I'm the only one in the group really looking forward to that bit!) then straight on to a lower trek through the jungle as well. The project phase is right in the jungle and then after all that we'll be under the Angel Falls in my birthday!

I'm liking the sound of the discount nights, huskyman!

If you buy anything from Cotswolds they do a price match offer so if you find it cheaper on the internet (including p&p etc...) they'll sell you it for that price...I've tried World Challenge, D of E and Student discount on top...they didn't have any of it!

Most of the 'club' nights I've been to have been by Tiso.

(I'm not a member of Uni. clubs), but as I know manager and staff very well, first name terms and out climbing, hillwalking and being a "body" for SARDA. I'm told when they are.

You could speak to staff, show student ID and ask them to email you when they are happening.

My nephew is in his 1st year at Cambridge (St Johns) and is keen on outdoor stuff. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have been able to find a 'Mountaineering' club at Cambridge. Also they have lectures/seminars on Saturday mornings so getting away at weekends to find hills is almost impossible. All a bit sad, I think. But then you don't go to Cambridge Uni. to major in 'Mountaineering'

With Engineering, you don't have any Saturday morning lectures or anything...apparently

You should tell him he picked the wrong course!

I can't believe that there isn't a mountaineering club or anything like that though...

Most universities have a climbing or mountaineering club of some sort, including of course Cambridge. Cathy, tell your nephew to improve his research skills!

He's doing Maths (and Physics?) on the 'natural sciences' course.
I last spoke to him at Christmas. I was surprised at the 'no' Mountaineering club response too. He is also kept very busy with his nose to the grind stone, but I'll check with him again when I see him next. -Especially as his last pressie from me was a Buffalo Tecmax!!

Thanks for the link - looks like a good club.

 edd,

Even if you don't get away too often, why not join CUMC anyway.

They will know when 'club nights' at outdoor shops are and will let you know. That way you could get the kit you want, cheaper and use when you are able too.

I think that'll be one of the first things I do when I get down!

It'll be really good to do it in a proper club I reckon; I don't really know many other people into outdoors-y stuff up here, my age so it's pretty much just little trips I do now, and keeping up my fitness for when I get the chance for longer stuff!
