Yorkshire to the Lakes? No way...

Finally got through to the Highways Agency phoneline.

A65 closed at Gargrave 7.5 - 21.5 and 28.5 - 4.6
A65 closed at Hellifield 15.5 - 21.5 and 28.5 - 4.6
both for resurfacing.

There will be limited access to the villages for residents but no through routes.

Anyone wanting to go to the Lakes from the West Riding either has to go south-west down the M62 just to then go north on the M6, or else north on the A1 to Scotch Corner then north-west on the A66 then south again to wherever. Thence making a day out in the Lakes totally unfeasible for me.

Thanks, Highways Agency, for depriving me of my favourite part of the country at the nicest time of year.

Where abouts are you? Surely you can cut across on the M66/65 or M61?

Err I spose, but it's a long and tedious journey at the best of times. I'd do it for a weekend but not just for a day.

I HATE the M62! Sometimes it takes us an hour and a half just to drive/stand in traffic for 4 miles to get on it!!!!
The A1 / A66 is a more attractive proposition but very lengthy.

p.s. Leeds.

You could always try those lovely moors in that strange county full of dodgy folk. You Know the one...

Yorkshire!

I'd probably go for the A66 too Jeannie, in preference to the M62. What about trying to get to Colne and then onto the M65? Trouble is that would only get you to Preston but would probably be better than the M62. Mind you, staying at home and chewing off your own leg would probably be better than the M62 and I suppose if the M65 was the answer you'd already of thought of it. The joys of travel in the UK.

I live in the lakes and regularly travel to Doncaster. Travel times on A66 or A65 to Kendal are similar within a few minutes. The M65 options is the longest in time and with new road works on M6 near Lancaster I would opt for A66 every time at present.

On the positive side we will have less visitors so the hills will be quieter:)

Richard - it's been raining for ever. Would you traipse over boggy dales (moors? <shudder> no way Jose) after the weather we've had recently? I only contemplate the Dales in midwinter or midsummer....

If you look at the map we have a *substantial* amount of south to travel on the <still shuddering> M62 before getting to the journey that is M66/Rochdale..A56 - M65/A677 to get to the M6. I have done it before when visiting schools round there and although it isn't too busy once I'm off the M62 it is a logistical nightmare. And in the time it takes to get onto the M62 (4 miles) I could be at Kirkby Lonsdale.....

"staying at home and chewing off your own leg would probably be better than the M62" ha ha Cath - there's a woman who knows what it's like!!!

Look what I've found.

Obviously the Highways Agency person I spoke to this morning wwho assured me that there were NO diversions in place is a blithering idiot.

What a suprise about the H.A. Have had dealings with them at work and they are a NIGHTMARE!!!!!
Was suprised to read there were no diversions, cos normally theparty undertaking the works must ensure where possible that diversions are in place!

Pardon the intrusion, but having travelled from Halifax to Melmerby every weekend for months, could I offer this route for those trying to get North? Head up to Skipton as usual, then take the A59 to Gisburn. From there, take the A682 to Nappa - this will deposit you on the A65 at Long Preston, just north of the road works. Sorted!

Take it Easy

Tony - intrude away! I may have to take that route for the June OM meet.
20/05/2003 at 21:23
Jeannie how long did the HA say the works would be for?
Cos take that figure and 1/2 as much again and you might get a more accurate deadline ;)
