Why Ban recretional 4x4's as most damage I see is caused by agricutural and forestry vehiles that will not be baned!
4x4 users pay road tax, insurance and people to look after there vehicles, quite oftern at a larger cost than walkers, they also contribute to the local income when staying away from there local area.
I admit there are bad as well as good 4x4 owners the same goes for mountain bikers horse riders and walkers.
There is several 'emergancy' support groups of 4x4 owners who help in bad weather and other times of need, who if they did'nt drive at other times would not be available when needed.
try reading some of the reports on byway usage pas and present, it details how wagons where stuck in mud for days in the past and how considerate modern usage keeps the ways open to all.
Final passing shot as a 4x4 owner I have been on working days clearing rights of way never yet seen a Rambler only heard comments I pay my tax why should I clear the paths!

stephen,
this has been dealt with indepth from I think all angles now in previous threads in the last couple of months. In fact I started one of them. It maybe worth having a read of them to get an idea of peoples opinions on this matter.

Yes it has been done recently but with Defra now getting involved and trying to stop off roading I felt it needed being kept in the news/picture as 4x4's now what next? just look at canoeing very limited where you can paddle with one sport trying to limit another! 4x4's now Mountain bike next? as highlighted on TV recently
Let the countryside be for all responsible users.

quite right. why should you clear the paths, after all, you are only doing it so that you can drive your vehicle along it or is there some other altruistic motive.

have you a suggestion as to how farmers can get their ploughs to their fields without a tractor or how forestry work can be undertaken without an appropriate vehicle.

Canoeists shouldn't be allowed on byways.

> Let the countryside be for all responsible users

That, I think is the nub of the problem. Irresponsible walker/MTBer cannot cause too much erosion without a lot of hard, physical effort. Irresponsible off-roader can do huge amounts of damage simply by pressing their pedal to the metal. And sadly, I've seen too many examples of irresponsible off-roaders.

canoeists only use the byways because there are great big ruts full of water

Re the Irresponsible walker/MTBer they do cause damage just look at the work the national parks have to do to maintain paths that historicaly only where walked by a few between villages and now have hundreds walk them every week. Just look at the local ramblers who walked a path near me two coaches of them walked a path now you should see it!
As far as the canoiest comments grow up!

Stephen,
read previous posting - all this has been discussed recently. And is now for the time being JUST BORING. Hello we've done this to death.

argument for not banning 4x4's well put there stephen.
i'm sure the local coucil committee (and public opinion) will be swayed by such erudite dialogue.

Parky Most of the rights of way worked on have been footpaths! as I just enjoy the countryside.
As reguards farmers and forestry work yes they need machines but other users should not be blamed for the damage have yet to see a 4x4 that leaves deeper than 10" rutts.
