Beckham's foot, Houlding's foot...

I can't believe how obsessed the media are with David Beckham's foot injury. What a difference a sport makes eh? Leo Houlding, arguably Britain's best young climber smashed a talus bone climbing in Greenland recently. Apparently the doctors think he'll never climb again while Leo begs to differ. He's had a bone graft from his hip to his ankle and is in plaster for around two months.

I'm not making any particular point here, but it's about time those wretched journos got a sense of proportion.

Radio 4 Today Programme, the BBC's flagship news programme this morning: the Sports news at 7.25 had an interview with "Sir" Alex Ferguson and in-depth seminar on the actual injury the boy-wonder had sustained, followed by a comment from the Manchester United Chief Executive: "no further developments expected today", followed by John Humphries interviewing an orthopaedic surgeon at length on the anatomy of the foot, what complications Beckham might expect to suffer: "he'll have a sore foot" - the whole thing could have been summed up in one paragraph: "David Beckham has broken a small bone in his foot. He'll be out of action for six to eight weeks. Worse-case scenario, he might miss the beginning of the world cup".

Not exactly on a par with finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in the Middle East...

is it just me that thinks. who cares?

They (the bl**dy Beckhams) are just vacuous media people - I refuse to use the word 'personalities' as it hasn't yet been proved that either of them has one.

Ask yourself - could you spend a night in the pub with this person (whoever) and have a fun night?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
11/04/2002 at 16:52
Right...

The Boy Beckham is a fantastic player, argueably one of the only two "world class" players in England at the moment (Michael Owen being the other).

Without him in the world cup squad I don't think that we have much of a chance of progressing far.

THAT is important. OK maybe not so important as the problems in the middle east and such but it is important.

and Yes I would like to spend a night in the Pub with both of the Beckhams...if you actually watched and listened to the interviews with both of them you'd see that they are actually sort of normal guys who have been labled by the media (which they HAVE used to their benefit) undeservedly as simpletons, simply due to their jobs.

Any one who can do what Becks does with a football is a genius.

and NO...I'm not a Man U fan...for my sins (as is well documented on the forum) I'm a Nottingham Forest fan.

Oh and as the famous footy quote goes...

"Football isn't a matter of life and death...

It's more important than that!"

I agree with Alex. Come on guys, this isn't some trivial injury of a climber - who? It's David Beckham and it's the success of England/an English team in Champions League and World Cup.

And no, I'm not a ManU fan either, but this is a national issue and it affects millions of people. Of course it should be discussed on the radio. We all want to know about it.

We do?

Genius? Beckham? I've told you a million times, Al, don't exaggerate..
11/04/2002 at 17:18
Yep. What is it about people in this country, who seem to have to moan at the slightest hint that something is being overreported? Millions of people follow football. Millions of people think beckham is a god. Millions of people want to know what happened after he was stretchered off.

Don't forget, this is only the next day. It's not like they've closed down the stations and played sad music for a week. So you're upset because someone decided to discuss it on the Today Programme instead of the perpetual battles in the Middle East? Come on. Give us a break. How picky do you want to get?

Just switch it off. I routinely switch off the Today programme, whenever they begin to disappear up their own backsides - which is often. Come on, show a bit of harmless passion for the national sport and our chances in the World Cup would you?

Good grief.

I think it's the cult of celebrity that is being reported, rather than a specific sporting concern about England's chances. the tabloid media especially, and increasingly the serious media following behind, have a cast of characters, soap stars, pop idols, media darlings, the Beckhams, whose every appearance is treated as though it is an earth-shattering event - I want England to do well in the World Cup, and god knows we desperately need Beckham fit, but they did seem to get a bit carried away with the amount of time they allocated to that particular news item, momentous as it was.

Have I mentioned that I met the Beckhams once?
11/04/2002 at 17:35
I guess I shouldn't care one way or the other whether you met them, should I? ;-)
11/04/2002 at 17:42
Exactly, Sal, nothing could be more trivial!
11/04/2002 at 17:44
That's cool Si!

I don't think we have a "culture of celebrity". I think we have a culture of media which makes us think what they want to think.

The fleet street media has far too much power over what and how we think...No matter what anyone says they dictate the mood of the country over events and not reflect them.

It was refreshing to see the Grauniad leading with world events last and this week, whilst all the others were reporting "old" news (Queen Mum STILL dead).

But then think of the average tabloid reader. Is the quintessentail Sun reader going to really care about the middle east, which he knows little about, and thinks has little effect on him, or is he going to care about Becks? Something within which he can participate.

Perhaps if we had a better and more responsible media we wouldn't be having this discussion.

As for the Today programme...it's gone right downhill since Sue left.
11/04/2002 at 17:50
I'd agree with Sal & Alex on this one. Beckham's vital to any World Cup Hopes, its not as if there's any replacement waiting in the wings
11/04/2002 at 17:53
Oh come on Simon...tell us, tell us, tell us...
11/04/2002 at 17:54
Maybe Stevie Gerrard...but he's no where near "world class" yet...
11/04/2002 at 18:24
Suffice to say that I got a far bigger buzz meeting Doug Scott, a man whose life and achievements which continue today with the community projects he organises in Nepal, far outweigh those of ludicrously overpaid footballers and their celebrity wives, yet receives little or no recognition for being the first Briton to climb Everest - respect to Doug!
11/04/2002 at 18:35
Fair enough Simon, but that's a bit of an apples'n'pears comparison, like saying nurses should get paid more than footballers because their job's more worthwhile.

Becks is in a category of his own, a man-god whose only fault is poor taste in women. Even his squeaky little voice just adds to his charm. I for one care very deeply about his poor little foot, not to mention the potential impact on our WC chances.
11/04/2002 at 18:51
Today they described him as 'England's charismatic captain'. When did he buy a charisma?

And isn't another of his faults his poor taste in clothes - remember the sarong?

Gosh, this trivia's fun...I agree, the World Cup will be crap if he's not fit cos England need him - respect to Sven!

Yeah, big up the Goran massive!

AAAAaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
