Best hill day of 2001?

What was yours?

So, as 2001 draws to an overdue close along with foot and mouth (touch wood), what was your best day on the hills?

To kick things off, mine was getting back from Spain in June to find that 90 per-cent of the Peak had been re-opened while I was away followed by a quick exploratory run up Doctor's Gate then a mountain bike ride near Ladybower - incredible feeling to get back out there.

Close contenders were actually both on OM Member Meet-Ups - the day we did Striding Edge on Helvellyn then round over Fairfield and down St Sunday Crag was a cracking day and I enjoyed the Tryfan-Glyders round we did on the Snowdonia meet as well.

Oh, and then there was climbing waterfall ice in the French Alps in January. Bliss and hot chocolate in close proximity.

So what was yours?

I have to be a suck-up but the Tryfan-Gylderau day on OM Meet I was probably the best. Supurb weather, great people, and a great challenging walk.

Either that or the first walk out onto the Langdale Pikes after they had re-opened (post FMD) or my solo trip over High Street on Feb 28th (about a day before they shut the fells).

This is getting a bit like an Oscars(R) speech!

And not to forget The trip to the Carneddau up the Lech Ddu spur, that was really good too!

And I'd like to thank my mother, and my wife, and my kids, and my dog...

My best day? Tough. Carnedd Dafydd in weather like the now last Jan was superb - sitting on the summit watching the sun set over the Glyders was amazing. So was the fact I could sit still for forty minutes at -15C. Modern gear is fab, isn't it? Also notable for my first and only for-real ice axe arrest.

Or what was supposed to be me leading a group up Snowdon with the uni walking club in Feb, but we had such a low turnout it was just me, a mate, and a random girl. Did Lliwedd in hot sun with Glasyn still frozen.

Or Crib Goch, the weekend it was re-opened. Warm, sunny, and great company from my friends and the people back on the hill for the first time in ages.

Nah, it's Dafydd in Jan. I'll never forget that sunny, icy afternoon and that sunset...

The Aonach Eagach with my mate Mark in August (I think!). Fantastic day out but the Israeli couple behind us ended up in the wrong gully (oops) and had to get mountain rescue out.

The night went a bit pear shaped though - a lovely meal followed by too many pints and whisky macs at the Inchree Centre. I blame the locals me. The mountainbiking the next day never got underway. In fact, nothing did!

Ring of Steall mid Jan kicked the year off pretty well, sat on the top till after the sun set, then Pic De Annie in the Pyrenees,
after that it got a bit blurred with too many days on climbs on Tryfan as F&M kept everything else closed, finished the year with Lakes trip, Blencathra,(Halls Fell Ridge), Gable, Skiddaw etc (and some important research to find the best pub in Keswick, we tried them all but need to go back and look at the shortlisted ones again)

Despite last years F&M, a few 01' highlights to choose from:

An early contender was two super days in the Howgills last Feb, a quite area & and some super weather on the Calf & Wild Boar Fell.

A glorious April Bank Hol on Stob Ghabhar with excellent views.

A bike ride to Glen Affric and afternoon hike up the unpronouncable - Sgurr nan Ceathreamhnan - was rewarded with stunning views across to Skye.

Both OM meets - Tryfan & the Glyders and Helvellyn & Fairfield. The former for the exciting scramble up Bristly Ridge. Cracking company, good weather on both w\ends.

But I supppose the highlight was August Bank Hol w\e in the Cairngorms on Cairn Toul, Angels Peak and Devils Point.

Having not got out much during the year Id have to go for the Howgills in Feb allthough I distinctly remember lots of snow on The Calf as well as a wind so severe that we managed to lose two maps.

Last Jan, Glorious sunny day Jack's Rake plastered with snow and ice.
April, Up on Stob Coire nan Lochan in superb winter conditions.
July, Wild camping on Arran, never been wilder!
August, The Pisciadu Climbing path, high and exposed (the climb that is, not me) in the Dolomites
September, Perfect round of Crib Lem, Lech Ddu Spur and the Carneddau, with virtually no one about.

Three weeks ago, meandering across the Ochils with the entire Forth Valley shrouded in fog due to a major temp inversion. Glorious sunshine up top, frosty down below.

Worst day? Schiehallion, May last year. The summit resembled a high-altitude beer garden. Horrondeous.

Doing Tryfan for the first time, as we'd done the Snowdon Horseshoe the previous day, and we were a little tired (landlord od local pub decided to close at 2am), so it was a nice quick walk/scramble to get up, and as we missed the proper path (how can there be a path up it?!) we just went towards the top.

Its got to be either: The Fairfield Horseshoe in February (just before F&M arrived) snow on a lot of the route, glorious sunshine, great views and a nice cosy bunkhouse to return to. Or Brigitta Tridentina (spelling) via ferratta in the Dolomites in July last year. Can't decide which.
