there I was watching a lovely blackbird
enjoying its regulur bath in my birdbath
and next doors cat comes and rips its head off...not fair really is it?
so do we put up with felines while they kill 100 million birds a year or do we treat them as vermin as in parts of n.z?

fireworks!!!! that confuses them! especially roman candles tied.........

I like cats and as long as I'm the editor of this site, they're staying put...

No pretences with moggies, they're just scaled-down predators. It's what they do. You have to sort of admire that.

And don't get me started on pigeons, talk about rats with wings.

yeah reading it back I asked for that one tony!fireworks sound intresting....but would they ever get airbourne?
maybe everyone should have dogs instead, yeah thats the answer!!

The bigest threat to bird life in this country is modern farming methods. The birds here have evolved with predetors ( all though not cats) in new Zealand they evolved without predetors and so the cats impact is very different there.

You can buy hanging bird baths...although there's probably a market for bird "snuff" movies
04/11/2004 at 15:10
yes youre probably right julie but I did read the house sparrows having real probs due to mr moggie...

Julie
Over the nation as a whole you may be right. Road kill is also significant. But locally, in most urban and suburban areas, the density of the cat population is enormous - FAR higher than it would be for any natural predator. It's far higher than the bird populations have evolved to deal with. Cats kill millions (might be tens of millions) of small birds and other small animals, and garden bird populations can be badly affected.

John is correct and a visit to the RSPB website would confirm this with research that they have undertaken.

I live in a semi rural area and have noticed a sharp decline in birds and a corresponding raise in the domestic feline population.

But, even the RSPB promote kind methods, one of which is collars with bells on, similar to jester bells, might give the birds some chance I suppose!
04/11/2004 at 16:35
BTW, the greatest time of loss to cats according to the RSPB is during nesting time when cats clear out the nests of fledglings, the do concede toothough that the proliferation of Magpies doesn't help, since they also predate nests of other birds!

No collars. Cats can get caught on branchs and choke.

Cats are cool, perfect pets and keep me company.

Also if the cats get the things that keep crapping om my car I'm happy
04/11/2004 at 16:41
They obviously don't if they keep crapping on it!
04/11/2004 at 16:45
They promote safety collars Stu that would break at a weak spot before they would choke a cat!

Talking of crapping, that is the main problem with cats, they ruin efforts at gardening.

I have a tried and tested answer though. Orange peel. Cats cannot stand it. I put it around my plants and it keeps the buggers away! Another on is short pieces of cut up hosepipe. This has two uses. Apparently, cats think they are snakes, and they have the advantage of the fact that earwigs crawl into them at night and can be disposed of the next day.

Bloody hell I am starting to sound like Titmarsh.

Oh don't be silly, what do I know about Geology !!

Not at the mo' paddy: I had to have my cats adopted by a mate cos the missus developed an allergy to them. Cow.

I'm not cattist. Some of my best friends are cats.
