Or is Outdoorsmagic enough for you!

Never got into myspace or you tube, but facebook is addictive.

Do these websites reduce the traffic on sites like this as people have more choice of what to surf? I used to see more posts on here before I am sure...

I think I've seen Dave Mycroft on Myspace though.

I'm not on the 'social networking' sites.
Must admit i'm curious, but my life's busy enough without adding another virtual strand of friends. I like the idea of forums like OM as you do get to meet the posters on here if you choose to go to a meet.

Put a couple of alcohol stove vids on Youtube, but that's it.

If i'm posting less on here, it's only so i've making more use of my time by walking in the hills rather than talking about them!

That and the fact that whenever i visit bargain alert i end up a couple of quid poorer and my gear closet a litte nearer bursting (Yes, confession - bought a new OMM Villain sac tonight!)

Hi Jules,
I'm on facebook...
but (so far) all the people connected are those that I know in person rather than online. I didn't really think it would be for me, but within a couple of weeks of signing up I had received chatty messages from old friends that I haven't seen in a decade. Felt a nice warm glow after that one, and decided to maintain it a little.

Want to be my first virtual friend?

John

No myspace etc. Just my blog and the common links us uk outdoor bloggers have formed into the online, and real world community this year.
That keeps me busy enough as it is!

Ray, that link just leads to the standard YT login page. Do you have a channel to point to? Please share it with the group.

I've been on facebook for a while. Search for me - my name's my OM username with 'ayles' added on the end!

But what's it for? Apart from providing helpful information for marketeers to trawl and exploit..?

If someone wanted to find me, they could just google. That's how a friend I hadn't seen in nearly 20 years found me.

Granted, a bit tricky if your name's John Smith...

The myspace pages I have seen seem rather strange. It looked to me as if newcomers were bombarded with messages of a dubious nature from porn sites. Either that, or there are some very strange women out there... Maybe it was just the ones I looked at...

Try googling Stuart Thomas. you'll get 200000 pages about a Welsh poet.

I've managed to get hold of my best mate who'd i'd lost contact with and rediscovered a load of bands I'd forgotten about. I've also put my own music on there for people to listen to. hey even if it's not popular least it's available for the first time in 10 years.

Yeah there are a few dubious messages but after a few weeks you get used to filtering them. Oh and Alfred Wainwright is one of my friends ;-)

I've also found that being in charge I can just get rid of any idiots. Unlike this place which was spoiled for me by certain people.

Anyhoo check it out if anybody wants

Try googling John Burley and you'll see why facebook works better for me. It sends me little notifications when friends post photos etc, so I keep up with what they are doing. Given that I live in France, this can be quite a pleasant connection.

Yeah, but how would anyone who hasn't met you in 20 years know to search myspace for 'tonguetiedrock'?

To be honest captain the people who might want to contact would be more likly to search under Tongue Tied than anything else.

I'm on most of these online communities and have been for over a decade now. There okay as long as enough people use them. Facebook really seems to have taken off big time over the last few months. Its ease of use and free facilities make it most peoples choice now. Facebook is nice and neat unlike MySpace which ended up too customisable and just ended up a big mess.

That'd give them 1,080,000 places to look, then...

Mostly about Red Dwarf as well ;-)

I've had three long-forgotten people get in touch with me via MySpace. I never do anything to my page at all, but it was nice to hear from them.

I've not used Facebook but am becoming less keen on it by the day. My best friend at work is mad on it and has been showing me various pics. She, and others, have put up things like school group photos from years ago, which led me to speculate that this would be the case with my old schools. Something about that really pisses me off. It's one thing a random bunch of people you knew as a child, and their mums, having these images tucked away in a drawer somewhere - quite another for them to be thrust in the public domain like that. Maybe I'm being over sensitive but I don't like it!
