A US Forestry Service employee has been charged with starting the fire that has burnt more than 100,000 acres of woodland and destroyed at least 22 homes near Denver.

Forestry technician Terry Barton admitted starting a campfire...while patrolling the forest to enforce a fire ban, said Bill Leone of the US Attorney's Office.

Barton has been charged with setting fire to timber in the national forest, damaging federal property in excess of $100,000 and making false statements to investigators.

"She attempted to suppress the fire but it grew," Mr Leone said.

If convicted, Barton could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.

Good grief. The lunatics have truly taken over the asylum.

perhaps she thought that giving a demonstration was a good idea........................ perhaps she should've asked her superiors for advice, i.e. anyone over the age of three with half a brain.

On the North East News today (tyne-tees), it was reported that Terry Barton had taken a letter from her estranged husband into the forest with the intention of burning it.

Pathetic and lamentable.

Jeannie, does WTF mean 'why the fire'...

So much destroyed by so little. Tragic.

Errr wouldn't it have been easier to chuck it in the fireplace at home???

Or just kick him in the proverbials....
