Geographical madness

Harrogate Trade-show

Hmm, every year you clear off to Harrogate,- the most southerly town of Yorkshire? What then, I ask you, is the humble city of Sheffield? Ok, yes, it's a city. But I'm quite sure that Harrogate is quite north compared to many other towns. Below Yorkshire, (south Yorkshire), is Derbyshire, which is in the Midlands, and thus not in the North!

Ah, Harrogate's southerness isn't so much geographical as cultural... Proper northern towns have proper northern things like whippets and grim northern b*******s wandering around. Harrogate on the other hand is more like, well, Bath, or Guildford. It's a bit of the home counties which has somehow been relocated to the frozen north. People in Harrogate hardly even have northern accents, I mean, what self-respecting northern town would have a tea shop called Betty's?

Nope, I think Harroagte's place on the map is just some sort of weird freakish occurence. It'll never last...

I like it there. It's nice to get down from Cumbria and live it up for a day or two. Anyway Jon, isn't it about time you learned how to spell Harrogate?

Richard, can I just ask you what you're favourite new piece of kit was from this show. We've heard Jon's piece from the show All The Latest Gear From The Show but we really want to know what you thought, being a Gear Guru and all

.u?.«?nest Sally, I am a bit of a tart at heart and I like a dusting of glitz and glamour along the way...

I have to say though, that I'm impressed with Mountain Hardwear's new Transition windproof baselayer. It sounds odd, but I've been using it for a couple of weeks and it's looking good.

Otherwise, I thought innovation was a little thin on the ground. Some neat ideas from Brasher, the Black Diamond Head Torch with a back-up LED is a good idea and I'm interested in seeing how the ultra-light GoLite gear works in the real world.

Finally, I like the look of the Scarpa Cerro Torre mountaineering boots and their new placcy, the Alpha.

The silliest thing I saw was the 90-litre travel pack on the Regatta stand. You could take your mates on holiday inside it...

Harrogate? Tea shop called Betty's?

Pah! Proper northern towns (such as my very own northern town, yes it does belong to me) have tea shops called "Coffee Revolution" and "Yvonnes"!

Still, after speaking to the manager of a large-northern-town-based-manufacturer-of-down-clothing-and-sleeping-bags then I think that your southern-northern town should be renamed to Horrorgate (yes he was at the show too).

Horrorgate would be about right, but the truly modish industry types refer to it by its Spanish name: so it becomes, something like, er, 'A Ro Gaté...

Bienvenidos á 'A Ro Gaté... etc. Sounds much more sophisticated. Anyway, you can't take anything for granted these days, there's now a tapas bar in Glossop. I mean, Glossop and tapas? Shurely shome mishtake.
