I'd rather be....

Does anyone like me wish they were just walking up a quiet hill in the Lake District this Xmas day, rather than rushing around like a headless chicken accomplishing nothing in particular.
22/12/2003 at 16:22
Yes.
22/12/2003 at 16:25
Actually no. It makes me appreciate the day after Boxing Day even more.

...I mean I was in Morrisons today getting my lunch and maybe I missed it but is there some massive natural disaster on its way, or nuclear war?

Do people really need that much food? Or is it "I have more in my trolly than you" competition?

At least Bo Selecta and the Office are on over Xmas, that make me smile, shopping at Xmas doesn't.

I just got sad this afternoon. I felt so sad that this is the pinnacle of our civilisation.

Sigh.

Sorry.

Consumer mode back <ON>

I get more disillousioned with Christmas every year. I haven't even put the tree up yet.

The kids are having dinner with their bio so we are seriously considering going somewhere very remote to meditate before we launch into our sized-for-two guinea fowl dinner.

Ian, On Boxing Day we'll have between 15/18 people for the day (not including the cats). Yes we need all that food!
22/12/2003 at 17:00
Mike,

Yes but a lot of people buy for 15, but never have that many and just end up throwing most of it away.

People now for some reason every Xmas think they need to buy in bulk when really there is no need.

How many times do you go to someones house at Christmas and they say "Hope you are hungry, cause there is loads of food and it will just go to waste!" Yes it will BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT TOO MUCH!!

22/12/2003 at 17:01
What the hell did we do before supermarkets?!

I think we were all a bit more reasonable.
22/12/2003 at 17:06
Throw food away!!!! Shoot them! Any left-overs are made into soups, stocks, pates, curries, etc and then frozen. Anything unusable is composted or give to the birdies.
22/12/2003 at 17:15
Sorry, i'm just ranting.

But its the sheer consumption of food and products, it gets worse every year.

And the fact everyone is compelled to buy presents, most of them no one actually needs or even wants.

I mean how many socks can you buy your Dad, and I think my Gran is getting a bit tired of ornamental spoons.

I sound terrible don't I...?
I just got everyone vouchers this year so they can all get what they want, no taking that jumper back thats too small/big etc..
22/12/2003 at 17:16
Anyone else listen to "You and Yours" at lunchtime about waste and the supermarkets?

And I thought that they were paragons of efficiency. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh no.
22/12/2003 at 17:18
Speaking as a Dad a pair of cool-max ones will be fine Ian, thanks. :-)
22/12/2003 at 17:19
Ian, you are not a lone voice, remember that. Your ranting is not abnormal and there are loads more of us who are more and more saddened each year by this time of the year.

I am not a religious man, by hey, there must be more than Woolworths and ASDA? There's got to be!
22/12/2003 at 17:33
5.30pm, I'm off.
22/12/2003 at 17:59
Christmas Day, great time to go for a walk :-)

Not many people, not much traffic, I'd do it. In fact I usually do, but in the Peak rather than the Lakes. Then back home for something like Christmas dinner, but less extravagant. And yeah, I'm annually shocked by the conspicuous consumption we seem to go in for as a society. Trip to Tesco anyone?

Don't remind me...that's tomorrows pleasure!

Can't wait!

Tomorrow I have to go into work, seeing as my timetable is being changed by 60% starting first week back due to 20% staff shortages and I got the provisional (not definitive) version of it the last minute of the last day before we broke up. Suddenly I have 3 exam groups to teach in a subject I've never taught before...cripes.

Excuse me if I feel more 'festering' than festive ATM...I'll have a busy 'holiday', that's for sure...

Tree's still not up

At least there's a smattering of decent TV this year. Belleville Rendezvous, 7pm (I think), BBC1 or 2, can't recall which. Supposedly stunning - rated by a friend at work who is never wrong. Animated, silent, humerous French film thingie......

M&S this evening, however, was neither French nor funny - I mean, I live in Birmingham - the shops are shut for 1day! 1 flippin' day. Nuts.

I've been feeling rather disilusioned by the whole thing, i finally pulled myself together on Sunday and put a tree up for the kids. The whole thing does seem rather pointless to me now ecspecially as i'm not at all religous.

We've got my parents coming over 2morrow night to babysit so we can get a few bits from Sainsbury's i just can't face dragging three kids round there after work. <sighs heavily>
