Joe Simpson

What's his handicap?

Went to see Joe Simpson last night, quite entertaining (even though he was late, we just had an extra pint at the bar). Ostensibly he was there to give a reading from his latest book 'The Beckoning Silence'. But, he quipped "If you want a reading from it go and buy it!" and gave the audience a potted history of his life as a climber instead. This mainly seemed to consist of falling off things with much emphasis on his 'celebrated' brush with death on Siula Grande. Amusingly the route taken on the second ascent of Siula Grande by Buhler and Price was named 'Avoiding the Touch'. Simpson does still have one great climbing ambition left, that is to climb The Eiger's North Face (probably taking a nine iron with him). At the end questions were invited from the floor. I couldn't help but ask the first one, "Do you think you have enough balls to play golf?", I think he probably has.

On a personal note, his first slide of the evening had myself and my friends hooting with laughter, it was a copy of a 'Far Side' cartoon (A mountaineering speaker is being introduced as "The man who conquered Everest, the Matterhorn, Kilimanjaro...." Said speaker is of course in the process of falling down the stairs). I know the cartoon very well, I have a framed copy hanging on my office door, given to me by my 'friends' a couple of years ago in celebration of my awe inspiring skill of falling off!

This weekend we're off to the Lakes for the club AGM where Chris Bonington is the speaker, it will be interesting to compare the two.

I tell you what though. Doug Scott is a great lecture to go to. He really can't talk, he waits for about a minute for us to look at the slide, then talks about it, but OMG!!! His slides are good! If you have the opportunity to go and see him, take it. He's boring as f*ck, but just look at his slides!

I've seen Scotty about half a dozen times - he really is a unique speaker!

The other thing to note about his slides is how many people are dead (a point he usually makes in a completely deadpan way).

Joe was good speaker (I've read the first few chapters of his new book - highly recommended already).

Never seen Bonners (apart from an argument I had with him once).

Who else springs to mind - Mick Fowler sounds exactly like a tax inspector (but again has a good show). Steve Venables was amusing (though all his slides were backwards).

The best I attended was Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes who speaks three times faster than anyone else (so his one hour talk packed in loads of stuff).

BTW, in searching for Fiennes full name, I found this potentially useful site for all prospective mountaineers/explorers.

I must learn to contribute (without putting stuff in parenthesis afterwards).

You had an argument with Bonny?

Ran into Christmas Berghaus during a rescue in Cheddar. He was fumbling around with an ambulance guy, worrying about his footware on the scree slope. Eventually we got Mr B to bugger off so we could talk to the ambulance guy in peace.

Strange, as I have great admiration for the man, especially his usually very good logistics, cf getting a broken Steve Venables off Panchu (sp?). Must have been a bad day out with Jim Curran.... Unsurprising the local news reported that Mr B had masterminded the whole rescue op.

Almost got punched by Ron Fawcett on a separate occasion....

BTW, finished Joe's book - excellent and honest as usual, shame it isn't twice as long!

Errr Sofa Man, you seem to get into some interesting altercations with people. Go on, tell us all about it.

Aw go on go on go on
(sorry I've been watching Father Ted again)

In the Plough (old-stylee management), too much Stones, Ron was doing a weekends training for about 12 people I used to work with in F&T. Obviously I had to verbally abuse them as they were wearing matching yellow shop tee-shirts.

Ron thought I was some drunken reprobate - I only missed out on a lamping by the big-handed man via the intervention of the shop manager (who explained that I was known and therefore harmless). All good innocent fun between friends.

Well back from the Lakes. (Didn't get lamped by anyone famous, wouldn't have felt a thing anyhow, damn whiskey chasers!)
Bonington's speech was ok and informative, but given the choice between him and Simpson, I'd rather listen to Joe who was more amusing.

Love the pic Mike D. Suits the person!

Thank you Andrew. Do you like my new trekking pole? (Not anti-shock) Great for getting through the crowds at the Ambleside gear shops.
