Liked the bit about skiving off work.
The Via Ferrata bit, is however complete poo. Saasongher? over half the article is about it, Granny do it? Must be joking she's got more sense, it's just a slog up a slag-heap. And they can't even get the guide book right. P*ss poor.

Mike, the new guidebooks out BTW. (probably been out for ages, but someone showed me it briefly on wednesday).

Must get round to grabbing a copy so I can check out the new grading system.

I've got the new guide Si, mixed feelings about it.

I've been a Trail reader for a few years and get it on 6 month subscription whenever there's a good offer (say free first aid kit), then stop and buy a few off the news stand, then take out the next good offer. That way if there's a crap issue or two (happens) I console myself that they 'gave' me £18 worth of free gear and I feel better...

I do read/rate the reviews (being a gear junkie) and have bought some of the recommendations, but often find they don't sweep the full market and have found better lines than some featured in a review. Plus they'll always be a yearly waterproofs review and how many of us buy one every year?

I think they've had to go further afield into Europe for stories as the UK's been done to death, and they've tried to brighten the format a bit. I think the news/access section is good, but other bits are looking a bit tired now. Let's face it though - if you've been around for years, there's only so much new stuff they can produce eventually, and I don't get as much as I used to from it (the magazine, the magazine!!)

Cheers, PB

Interestingly, there's a theory that specialist magazines turn over their readership every five years as they learn more and articles start to repeat, so total originality in every issue isn't just near impossible, it's also pointless and counter productive since a lot of your readers will never have seen the original article, so they'll never know.

As a journo, I reckon the essence of it is finding angles, so even if you're covering the same areas and topics you do them entertainingly and in a different way.

On the gear test front, it's impossible for a magazine to cover everything that's on the market and test it properly as well. That's one of the reasons we introduced the User Review System.

Has anyone else noticed that it's Ed Kenyon's last issue as editor?
10/12/2002 at 13:06
Yep, he's been promoted to publisher. So if anyone wants to be editor of Trail, erm, I think it's too late.

Maria del Carmen Clegg's left to go freelance as well and Liz, who was the acting features editor, I think, has gone off to Garden Answers.

So it's a fair educated guess that there will be some vacancies going on the magazine some time.

I have a question about gardening...

WHY???

As for Trail. I disagree about "everything has been done". There's loads left to cover and lots of interesting things out there.

It's just having someone there on the mag with the vision to say "what is there else out there that we could do".

Regarding this months issue, what was it with that EBC article? I was just getting into it and it stopped! I thought I'd just read the introduction but no that was the whole thing!

AND thankfully Jean Luc didn't write the Mountain Guide for this month and it actually had some readable information in it!
