This is your chance to come out and pop your forum cherry. Oh, one more thing, if you tick the box below the submission box when you post, you'll get an automatic e-mail whenever anyone replies to the thread. If you don't want one, leave the box unticked. Neat huh?

Anyone got any tips on what to look out for when buying a tent? I was looking for a fairly cheap affair for camping in the Mourne Mountains here in N.Ireland, and possibly in the Republic...What should I pay? Wht should I be looking out for?
17/05/2002 at 13:11
well ok I suppose I should come out now - it was getting a bit cramped lurking in this closet for so long anyway. I should get out and stretch my virtual legs! I've been lurking for 6 months now enjoying all the positive feedback you guys give and soaking up the witty banter some of you guys(meaning guys and girls I assure you) throw about like mud! Can I play now?

nick
yes you can play as long as you aren't in Mr Hooks gang
Andrew I've no doubt Jon and Joan will give you some pointers, theres also previous discussions on the forum about tent purchase if you search the subjects for 'tents' or whatever I'm sure you'll come up with stuff.
In my experience of camping in Eire the most important points are fully sealed bathtub groundsheet and a large porch for cooking in the rain!

Jon

thanks for the invite, this is my first time so hope you're all gentle and keep in touch, not like some forums I've known. No chance of knitting this weekend, doing the Big Black Mountain Challenge outside Abergavenny, a 43 k hike across 14 of the Black Mountains 2000 ft tops. How come nobody reviews walking umbrellas?

Think a sub awua suit along with aqua lung may be required! Good luck, try not to drown.

This was a super idea Jon...and welcome, everybody.

welcome to the house of fun, outdoors and downright randomness

oh and dodgy speeeelingz
17/05/2002 at 15:25
Can I come back out of the woodwork then? Can I? Can I?
17/05/2002 at 15:26
welcome new postees...

Neil thanks for the advice. Hard to know sometimes when you're just starting out where to look. Always feel that hint of embarrassment in going into a outdoor shop and not knowing what you're talking about. The porch is DEFINITELY a good idea...did you know that Irishmen have webbed feet incidentally?!
Many thanks again!

No thank me. But seriously, the reason we started the thread was because it can be a bit strange the first few times you post to a forum, but this one's always been very friendly, with the possible exception of Mr Hook / Axe who seems to have departed for now...

The only walking umbrella I'm aware of by the way, is the GoLite one. I guess most testers are simply too scared to venture out armed only with a glorified parasol, but I am prepared to request one from GoLite if anyone's wondering how they do in UK conditions. Good luck with the walk Al, let us know how it goes.

On the tent front, probably best to ask in the gear section of the forum.

Just for Al, I've reviewed my specialist technical walking umbrella. But it's not made by a regular OM brand, so it awaits editorial approval before you can actually see it.

I thought I'd join the new posting frenzy too. I have posted a little before, and I still live! I'm still awaiting the ascerbic wit and cutting character assassination of the Outdoors Magic veterans

Assuming that I'm included in that...well we don't bite. Generally I think we are welcoming of new posters...

Now you've all "popped your posting cherries" get out there onto the rest of the forum, we welcome your views...

While we're on the subject, I have been away for over 3 months with no access to the net.
Upon coming back a few days ago, I have noticed that there is a lot more traffic on the forum.
I am glad the site has gone from strength to strength, unlike, apparently, BM, in which case the forum seems to have deteriorated somewhat.
IMO

You're all very welcome - don't let Alex nip your ankles BTW

Tony, by and large BM's still ok, can't say I've looked in the soap box threads for a long while.
17/05/2002 at 22:18
I agree with you Lloyd about BM still being ok, better than ok, infact, it's just that I'll have noticed a bigger change than anyone by being away for so long.
You know, like when you only see a small relative from one year 'til the next. It's then when you see a big change, rather than barely noticable changes if you seen them everyday. (does that make sense?).
It's probably the soapbox that I mean, if I think about it.
