Looks like the new neighbours are a bit picky about new residents

I'm sure they'll come round

So Dids - as OM resident on the Red Planet - I'm planning an ascent of Mons Olympus possibly next year depending on funds. At 88,580 feet that's higher than I've been before, but apparently it's much warmer on Mars. Would a good three season bag be suitable?

Also, is anyone else as cynical as me and wondering at the timing of the landing? I know a lot depends on relative orbits, but in the week China and USA are eyeballing each other over the Olympic podium?

No questioning the achievement - makes one proud to be an Earthling.

Good question Grumps.

First off i would start at the top and be careful what Tent you choose as unlike back on Earth there are no trees so that's the Akto out of the question as its only suitable below the tree line, secondly sleeping bag like you asked is another good question as unlike Earth again there's no water so no need for a heavy bag outer to protect from water damage but personaly your high up so getting colder so go 5 seasons plus!

Fuel is another tricky one as as your aware you will be at altitude and not great for normal gas canisters so possibly liquid fuel like meths or pure Alcohol would be better and tbh it will probably be easier to smuggle pure Alcohol through martian customs.

Kep your kit to a minimum and take all your poop home with you and no fires, yes i know theres nothing to burn but you dont wanna send smoke signals to the little green men in Park Patrol!!
Dont forget to take lots of photos and please take the time to do a trip report when you get back.
Good luck have fun!! Be safe!!

On the subject of tents.... given that Mars is the Red Planet, I submit that one would need to use a green tent in order to have the same impact as using a red tent on this green and pleasant planet.

Hell yeh thats the only place Green tents would rule!

Have you ever seen the Milky way Kate whilst out camping? Winter is the best time.

Yes, I know it's a bit big but that's a man-made object falling towards the surface of our nearest planetary neighbour. Or the locals coming up for a look-see

And now Curiosity has taken a panorama of it's landing site.

No sign of any green tents there yet
