More postings per page...

You should notice a change on the site shortly - there will be 20 postings on each forum page instead of the current 10. Even better, at some point in the future, it'll be user adjustable, so you'll be able to decide how many postings you want to see at any one time. Neat huh? It'll mean 50 per-cent less clicking, so there'll be fewer clicks around.

That'll mollify those that think we're too cliquey.
09/01/2004 at 16:07
or perhaps now, not cliquey enough
09/01/2004 at 16:23
There will be more cliques on each page and that's official.

Oh, and there'll be 40 threads on each page when you first go into a forum section, like Soapbox for example, it's already being tried on BIKEmagic, or at least it was.

Does that mean pages will take even longer to load?

Pages will take about the same time to load, but you'll have to load them less often. Unfortunately a software glitch means that the site load very slowly for anyone with the initials 'JC'. Sorry.

Bugger.

Double bugger.

Why DOES the site load so slowly? I have broadband and it still takes as long as giant pic of the Matterhorn. Is it all the ads with their cleverdicky graphics?

It should load really fast now. We swapped to new, faster servers just before Christmas and despite some teething problems, it's now very quick for me. Are you using a proxy server to access the web Joan?

Yes, what difference does tha make?
09/01/2004 at 19:08
It might mean that the proxy is re-accessing the site every time you load a page, which might slow it down. I'm not a techy, but it might be faster without the proxy. Maybe worth a try.

Loads fast enough for me.

Hope the new changes come sooner rather than later!

The new structure's already up on BM, so I'd guess we'll get it tomorrow unless there are problems with it.

Nope. Still 10 posts per page for me!

Don't know whether this has been raised before but would it be possible to have the last replies at the top instead of at the bottom and then we would not have to spend so much time trying to find out where we left off last time. I have seen other sites which do this. E.g.on the Touching the Void latest release one which has got 70 plus messages Jenny put a message a day or two ago that it has been listed for a BAFTA but I nearly didn't read it because the page is so long.

I suppose we could, but it's much more natural to read down the page than up it, so I suspect it would just divide opinion closer. Ideally you would have a choice. You can always set your forum preferences so that the thread opens on the last page, in which case you read the most recent posts first.

I sort of actually agree with Andy on this one. It's nice to have a lot of postings on one page but is it a sort of pain scrolling down through 19 of them to read a one line posting at the bottom.

I know, I'm moaning. Sorry.

Don't PCs have a short cut for that? With the Mac, the apple key plus the down arrow takes you to the bottom of the page... [shakes head despairingly]
