What do you reckon, will you go to an outdoors show costing a tenner a head at the NEC? And what else would you want to see there apart from the gear testing facilities, indoor adventure race circuit, all the obvious outdoor organisations and so on?

How about an indoor ice-climbing wall??? I'd love to have a go and try that, with all the gear supplied to try it out before I have to buy the stuff. (Yes, I am a cheapskate!)

As for would I go? Well, come next March I'll be living about 30 minutes away from the NEC so I'll probably pop in for a look see.

All the top stuff. Area's to try out equipment, like the ice climbing wall (like in Tiso, in Glasgow... they have an ice wall), and a high pressure shower, to trry the jackets. That kind of thing. But I think I'll be there no matter if they do that or not.

Hmmm, I think it's a bit cheeky to charge a tenner a head to go into what will basically be a giant shop. Seeing as companies only participate in these shows to up their profits, if they're unwilling to underwrite the ticket costs, they should at least provide a book of discount vouchers or similar which would (a) boost their sales and (b) make the customer feel their visit isn't going to leave them out of pocket.

I certainly wouldn't schlep all the way to the outskirts of Birmingham (petrol £20+) and pay for the ticket as well if there was no financial advantage in doing so. Unless they had some particularly fascinating 'added attractions' - and I don't think a Ramblers Assocation stall would count here.

If it were being held in London, then I'd go along, but the drive from Kent is a bit of a trek, and coupled with the tenner to get in makes it an expensive proposition.

If I can get discounted tickets I'd go, but I rather spend the tenner on the Good Food & Drink Show!

Like most of these shows you can probably get "free" tickets

If there's enough interest, I'm sure we can persuade the organisers to do some sort of discounted ticket offer or competition or something. Mike, do you really think they'd let you into the Good Food and Drink Show? Just think of the damage you might do to all that tasteful crockery and carefully constructed canapes, I htink you're barking up the wrong tea...

I'm quite a regular at the GF&W show, they don't let me out of the wine hall. ;-}

This is the thread for the show everyone's talking about in the Llanberis Film Fest thread, so you can come here to do it and leave that 'un alone!

I'd rather be out in the hills than goin round the NEC, (and I'm only 30 miles away),
I might be tempted if the weather's crap that weekend, if I was in need of loads of gear I suppose it would be more tempting

Nearly was going but clashes with the Wuthering Hike.

Pay over the phone before you go (therefore £8 per ticket), and quote "Trail" (as in the magazine), and get to tickets for the price of one! Bargain.
13/01/2002 at 22:38
that should be ...get TWO tickets for the...
13/01/2002 at 22:40
Did anyone know I had a letter published in Trail?
14/01/2002 at 08:13
Well, we're going. We go to the Dive show each year and get to see and handle the latest kit (from the manufacturers' stalls where they aren't trying to sell you anything) (and give you free replacement "bits" instead of you having to order daft things like snorkel strap retainers) and then buy stuff from the retailers who offer special show prices.

There are also lots of handouts and freebies.

I haven't had a letter published in Trail (unlike some famous people) but I had an article published in 'The Guide' when I was about 12 about camping.
Then again, I've got free tickets to the Outdoors show so bleeeaaahhhhhh.

(not trying to be childish at all)

MY letter to Trail was letter of the month....

We're in danger of entering into "Trail Letter" snobbery here. I have, of course NEVER had a letter published in Trail. Its disgraceful and I think I'm being discriminated against.

Or, maybe it has something to do with the fact that I've never sent a letter in to Trail. Nah, I'm going with the discrimination theory.

Yes im going, and im going to the bike one if its one this year. I haven't got free tickets :'( . Ice climbing wall sound a g8 idea.

see ya there
Ben

p.s, my mum got some free lowe alpine socks from trail (walker... yes a long time ago)for published letter.

Well, from The Guide I got a cheque for something daft like 50 pence and a free copy of the magazine - which was silly as I got it on subscription anyway as they well knew....
Not as good as On The Hill where you get a head torch just for subscribing...

Didn't they used to give you something like a Swiss Army Knife for ordering Trail last year? All they want this year is your cash. Seems to me like they have enough customers now.

What was this thread about?
