Got a couple of probs today, wondered if you could help.

1. Got an email from a friend (turned out 2 B a hoax) telling me to delete JDBGMGR.EXE immediately as it would eat my hard drive. So I did it, found it was a well-intentioned passed-on hoax...how T F can I get the file back? It's needed for java stuff!

2. We have trial package of Norton Antivirus but it's time to renew. We have option of the Whole Suite including Clean Sweep etc, at a much greater cost.

Would you recommend the full thing? Otherwise we would periodically initialise the hard drive and reload from scratch to get rid of crap.

Hmmmmm.

Any advice gratefully received.

Jeannie, go here - AVG Anti-Virus - it's free, and does the job.
28/09/2002 at 13:37
Try again - AVG Anti-Virus

I'd also recommend AVG...rated highly in all the geek tests, and like Si says...it's free.

Also free updates.

I've been using it for over 2 years now. Really good stuff.

Thanks all. Alex - file now back it's rightful place...doncha just HATE these bl*eding hoaxters?!

OK chaps - position is...we have Norton going ATM. It is very good and picks up all sorts of cr*p even from emails in & out and sorts it. It runs an auto system scan each Friday, and (our option for this last part has expired) each week it invites us to obtain recent virus definitions & updates, so it's impossible to forget to update.

Does AVG do all that? Would recommend dumping Norton and installing AVG instead?
28/09/2002 at 14:04
Yes AVG can be set for auto updates and also receives email warnings if a big virus is unleashed.

I'd go for AVG...free and easy.

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

I will trial it on my pooter....
28/09/2002 at 14:10
Yikes! Read the conditions and we can only use it at one pooter at our address and can't use it on a network...we have a network and 2 pooters on it plus a standalone to protect...not suitable for us

Pants! Did someone call?

Baga here (so never fear?)

Jeannie, yep you've found the small print and it is a matter of personal integrity (IMHO)

Right then, anti-viral (and remember firewall too) software. There are several options the easiest is: get in the decorators or whoever can do it (guaranteed) Downpoints: cost, what if I change my spec, what after-config support do they do.. blah blah de blah-blah

DIY: smaller costs (in short-term) greater costs in longterm (especially if the pooters go belly up)

Other thoughts: how much are u prepared to pay to protect your puters, how valuable are your data & files, how confidential are your data & fules?

<I've goit bored with this>

If you forward suspicious e-mail to a hotmail account it will run McAfee latest version on any attachments and will refuse to open it if it contains an incurable virus.
