Paramo Question

Honest question!

Hi All,

I'm a Paramo geek but can't seem to find the answer to one simple question (I have searched!)

Drumroll...

Do you actually need to re-proof Paramo???

I haven't bothered and I was up in the Carnedds this Sunday in my battered Viento and Cascadas. We had serious driving rain all day and the outer layer wetted out (e.g. totally saturated with no beading at all which is what I assumed the Nikwax treatment was meant provide.)

However, at the end of this I was still bone dry. So, what does the proofing agent actually provide other than than some initial, short term, surface protection? Hope I'm not being thick, just genuinely curious!

Because...

... when you proof the garment it doesn't just proof the outer shell, it also proofs the directional lining, zip bits etc, which helps it to transport water outwards. The surface DWR wears off faster because of abrasion, but the proofing within the garment will still be working.

Yeah, defintely needs reproofing. Mine certainly does that's for sure, I got absolutely drenched in last hour and half of a walk in the Peak yesterday near Crowden.

Eventually the rain went right through my Paramo Alta and I was totally wet inside by the end, it would have been particularly unpleasant if it was near the beginning or middle of the walk that's for sure. I hung it to dry at home when I got back yesterday evening and it was still wet on the inside this morning.

I think Paramo recommend about once a year or more if you use it a lot, have a look at the customer service/after care section of their website

Suspected that the proofing might apply to the innards too. Mega impressed with the speed of the Paramaniacs reply though!

That said, shouldn't the DWR coating reduce the efficiency of the pump liner? Probably opening a right can of (technical) worms with this question...

I think again not totally sure as I haven't done it yet but you reproof with TX Direct wash in which does both sides of the garment

It reproofs all three sides of the garment: inner side, the outside and the bit in between which is technically referred to as 'the inside' to distinguish it from the inner side ;-)

IGMC...

There's a farm near me which breeds Alpacas. I want to adopt one!
