Hi all

Just thought I would throw this one into the pot for a discussion; what political party is everyone going to vote for when election time comes?

I feel as though I have lost all faith in the main three what with expenses fiddling, the Condems attempting and it looks like succeeding in creating a two tier social society of the rich and poor, privatising anything that has the opportunity of making the rich richer and keeping the poor down.

Labour appear to be floundering around and stand to lose a long term connection with the Unions that fought so hard in the past to bring into play what we all know today as employees rights, safe working condition, protective work wear and many more measures that were hard fought and won by our forefathers these rights are now being threatened by this totalitarian government and its bombastic, self opinionated and “you will do as I say approach”.

The NHS, truly a jewel in the British Crown respected the world over and an engine of knowledge helping to create fantastic Health care professionals that serve the Public 24/7 and cascade that knowledge around the world. Yes there are many faults with the NHS but to privatise it I feel is not the answer think about it there are over 60 million people in the UK what percentage of these people pays tax just like you and I? What percentage of people pays National Insurance Contributions just like you and I?  That is an awful lot of monies where is it going?

The Government are saying that jobs need to be found for the Youth of our Society...... well they have created a problem by scrapping free higher education for School leavers and again making it a reality for the privileged in society to attain a degree...elitism?.

The Government has also increased the retirement age to 66 and beyond so we have an ageing population working well beyond their years and into an early grave, there is no wonder the kids cannot get a job, next time you visit Tesco’s or a similar store have a look at whose filling the shelves aside from the odd foreign national you will see many old aged pensioners that really should be at home enjoying their retirement but because of pressures put on them by this Gov and its policies and many pensioners having to support their younger members of the families who cannot get work. They have to work into what is the “evening of their lives”. These Pensioners have done there bit for our country and come 60 all pensioners should be able to retire safe in the knowledge that they will be provided for, cared for, have heating, food and healthcare are able to socialise and enjoy their lives and have the necessary funds and support to do this.

Retiring at 60 would create the jobs for our Youth, real jobs with real futures watched over by a wise experienced, and motivated elderly population that although retired have the energy, commitment and interest to advice if required and are welcomed to do just that.

Many of us have children we have heard a lot recently about Global Warming, greenhouse gases, sea levels raised by the polar ice cap melting, there has been a tentative approach at creating green energy but there has been no “aggressive” plan to combat and change the threat to our world, we see world leaders sit and squabble but nothing happens and the world coughs and splutters on. England created what are many of the environmental problems faced in the world today  with the Industrial Revolution, now China and many other developing nations are repeating those mistakes someone has to act the time for talks is over “Actions Speak Louder Than Words” and as my mum used to say an “Empty Drum makes the Loudest Noise” Mr Cameron.

Not sure how I'll vote & don't plan to discuss it here but with regard the statement above I don't see the connection unless it's assumed all jobs demand a degree.  We should be training the craftsmen, plumbers, builders & mechanics of the future as well as filling our call-centres with graduates.

I hear a vote for the money fairy right there

Happily they've thought of that too!

First they came for the nurses and paramedics...

I completely agree that pensioners deserve to have a good standard of living, but people need to understand that with an aging population, it's not fair that young working people have to support this through taxes. Therefore, as  life expectancy goes up, it's only fair that the retirement age should increase too. People may not agree with that, but as someone potentially facing much higher pension and tax contributions in the future, I feel that it's only right to retire later or pay more if you're going to live for another 20 years after retiring.

I agree with you here - the government have scrapped the future jobs fund and raised the cost of higher education but are now wondering why no young people have jobs!

....we see world leaders sit and squabble but nothing happens and the world coughs and splutters on.

If I'm honest, I don't see any government genuinely doing something to stop global warming. That's why I'm so worried about it, as no-one in government is prepared to do anything and we'll have to live with the consequences.

Maybe if the government went after tax dodgers with the same zeal they are targeting the poorer members of society. I heard on the radio today, that last year Tony Bliar paid £315,000 tax on his earning of £12,000,000. I think that works out at a tax rate of under 3%?

I wouldn't mind paying 3% tax.

I'd love to pay £315K tax!
25/01/2012 at 17:28

The day I pay £315K tax... I'll buy the entire membership of OutdoorsMagic a pint at the Tan Hill Inn!

I've always been away from home, and often out of the country, during elections, so I can always say it's not my fault. When I get back home, the real winners are the paper recycling companies, where all the party manifestos go when I clear them from behind the door. Sometimes, I scrutinise them, but so far not a single candidate has expressed their views on the Paramo vs Gore Tex debate!

Explorer - I have heard the argument from pensioners that they spent their whole working life paying into a pension scheme and once they retire at the age of 60 or 65 the pension they get is what they have paid into. Or to put it better they have paid into a pension fund exactly what they were required to pay into it at the time that payment was due (when they were working) so that it came back to them on retirement in the form of a pension at a specified age. It is not their fault the money got invested in (pissed up the wall) on pet projects, debt support or schemes aimed at buying votes from sections of society that help the party in power the most to win elections.

That doesn't take away from the fact that those pensioners have paid what they were obliged to pay in to get the benefit of a pension at the age of 60 or 65. It does make it harder for the fewer left who are paying into the government's coffers to support those pensions, but that is down to a generation and more of politicians not the pensioners. There is no fair solution to that conundrum I think.

That's it, and even that is peanuts compared to Vodafone's (for example) tax avoidance - which someone incompetent ion HMRC agreed to

short answer to the original question...... green party for me
25/01/2012 at 19:16
I don't vote in the UK but back in the old country and since I was 18 (22 years ago), I've voted Green in elections.

I'm no Tony Blair fan but the 12 mil was turnover for his business (i.e. not him personally) with 1 mil being profit which makes the corporate tax rate on 315k around 30%ish.

11 mil is a obviously a large amount to be taken up in business costs - i.e. PAYE'd wages, admin, travel, security, air fare and hotels for himself and staff, (registered) charity gifts and bad debt etc.

This is certainly not unusual as most businesses are not making any profit, posting losses that roll over to subsequent years balance sheets and paying zero tax.

Tony Blair paid 50% tax on the wages he paid himself and he will be a regular PAYE tax payer like anyone else.

Nice one.  You'll never get a job as a tabloid journalist exposing the twisting of the figures like that!
25/01/2012 at 20:27
Have to say I'm quite surprised at some of the naiveté being shown here.
25/01/2012 at 20:27
I know, unfortunately it is far to easy to read tabloid rubbish rather than actually tax law.

No problem there. They can all attend Scottish Universities  for free ( paid for by Scotland resident taxpayers) when independence comes

Vote - No way

The UK is run not only by Politicians but the press

The majority of politicians have never lived in the real world and have no grasp on what is important to REAL people. I believe many are not in it for the people, but themselves - Diamond crusted pension, set their own pay etc - what other industry does that happen in.

The consolation is, as least they are quite as crooked as other countries.

Tony Blair - 3% tax, I wonder if he is still UK resident for tax purposes!! Just how much of his wedge does he do anything charitable with!! TAKE TAKE TAKE - That's politicians  for you

Journalists manipulate us to the way that sells papers, and we the public are still influenced by the crap they write.

As for the Scottish and Welsh further education and prescription's etc - Don't get me started

AHH! I feel better for that little rant- thanks for the thread
