Well, decided to do some reaserch into getting from home to tryfn by public transport. The result is that to get anywhere near by train, i have to endure 4 changes with a wait of 1hour at each, hece taking 6hours to get from Gobowen to Bets-y-coed. from there its a bus trip to capel, before yet another wait and the yet another bus to get to the foot of tryfan. So, if i left Gobowen station at 08:00am, i might just gettheir intime to pitch me tent just before it gets dark. Useless for a day walk then.

So Mr National Park Boss bloke. perhaps it might be an idea to think about providing alternitive methods of transport in the Parks before going through all these "Green Fingered Plans" to ban people from using cars, as Walkers and Climbers using the Parks have no choice if they want to get out for a walk then travel home again after!

Things are sometimes easier elsewhere, eg in the peaks you can easily drop yourself in the middle of Edale by train and the bus services seam to reasonably good.

bit far from Tryfan though!!

The peaks being the exception to this trend. I supose the lakes isn't to bad either. Sadly this problem seems to be at its worst in the welsh areas, putting people(students etc with no car) from visiting such areas wehre the locals could really use the cash, outdoorsy types bring in. esp post F&M situation.

do the post buses run in snowdonia, ? there is quite a good rural network in Scotland that I've used on occasions

well, ARRIVA CYMRU do run a buss service thru wales. tho it tends to be about 2 busses per day.

The public transport in North Wales used to be really good. When I was a kid we would often go there for a week or two and go all over the place by Crosville buses or by train. My Dad would get the timetables and we wouldn't ever be unable to get exactly where we wanted to.

What on earth has happened? This country is going downhill fast.

yes and the prices are going up too. £58 for me to get a return from shrewsbury to penrith. bl**dy discrace

Ben is that with a young persons card?
Jeannie the Answer is obvious PRIVATISATION wonderful isn't it..........
07/04/2002 at 17:07
Yeah...lets privatise the pathways next...

I Imagine 10 years in the future...A sign at the bottom of Coledale Hause...

"This path is maintained for the highways agency by Arriva Paths (North).

We'd like to apologise for the late running of this path; it's due to the wrong colour of socks used by the several of our sub-contractors-sub-sub-contractors who are clearing mud from the path sides.

Remember Path-dodging is a crime and punishable by th ewearing of 3/4 lenght trousers, red socks and a years membership of the Ramblers Association."

Did Snowdonia by public transport over Easter weekend - never again! Took most of the day to get from Telford to Nant Peris - not helped by the fact the bus timetables I cunningly looked up beforehand were all out of date and wrong, as was the info at the bus stops in Bangor (had to go to tourist info to make any sense of it all). Lots of waiting around in Bangor and Llanberis over the course of the weekend. Attempt to beat the crowds on Crib Goch by getting an early start foiled as the first bus didn't leave until 9.30 or so in the morning (walked but only got there 5 mins before the bus - still, saved 40p and got some exercise!). Although the Sherpa buses are probably much better in summer. Ended up costing me a lot of money simply because of the amount of time we spent in gear shops in Llanberis, killing time waiting for buses...

Although had fun watching people try to extricate their cars from the mud on campsite...

The Lakes is a joke as well - The Lakes Link (bus 667, although I am sure it used to be the 666) took several hours to get from Milnthorpe (just south of the Park) to Keswick. Silly really - and they wonder why everyone drives.....

When F&M was just ending and there was the limited re-opening in Snowy, all the carparks were closed save Llanberis. The Sherpa bus did loops coming and going every half hour, with an unlimited ticket costing the princely sum of one quid. It ran from 8am till late in the evening, and frankly, it was very successful.

This is the sort of service you could expect to see if Green Key was implemented, though the larger car parks such as PyP would still be open albeit more expensive. Some of the more random laybys would be closed but those for Dinas Mot, Cromlech etc maintained.

After driving around a bit on Good Friday and not finding a SINGLE space in Llanberis Pass, PyP or PyG at about 11am, I honestly can't see how you could argue against GK for peak periods, as the current arrangements just don't work.
08/04/2002 at 20:33
they could put some sort of signs up telling the public which carparks are full, somewhere near where the park & ride starts from then folks could decide wether to drive on or use the bus, I usually avoid the hot spots on busy weekends
09/04/2002 at 12:02
Dave; no it wasnt but tat would reduce it by about 6 quid, and the railcard costs 18 quid. plus im 17soon. not really much point
09/04/2002 at 12:04
Helen. How did you get from telford. you ust have used more or less the same line as i wanted to use going throught shrewsbury and Gobowen no???
