Not an outdoor subject but I really am getting sick of junk mail.

Just under a year ago I purchased a printer from PC World. Whilst going through the till i was asked for my address (House number and postcode) which I duly gave. I have received three letters from PC World stating that my manufacturer's warranty is about to expire and they were offering to extend the term to 3 or 5 years depending on whether I wanted to spent a third or half the cost of the printer respectively.

Am I obliged to give my address to these people?

No, you can refuse to give your address - the only time, AFAIK, that you actually need to give your address is if you buy on credit - i.e. to check that you actually live at that address etc. If you're paying in cash/by card/cheque and they ask for your address, just tell 'em to b*ll*cks.

The "etc." bit, is a credit check, I should probably add :)

a liitle piece of wisdom

if thes retail people want any more than payment for the goods then go elsewhere

all these letters they subsequently send out have to be paid for by someone ...you the punter you dig

i have found that the best thing to do is go elsewhere

bought a pay as you go mobile a few years back cach sale

link...cnt sell it to you if you dont give us all your dtails oik in the shop said

same story in most phone shops in inverness

went to electical retailer scottish hydro money exghanged for said phone no hassel

if they kindly include a pre-paid envelope then just send them the junk-mail from another unwanted mailer after removing any bits of paper that identifies you of course. helps to keep it out of a landfill for a while.

i once disposed of an old bathroom mat (after cutting it into appropriately shaped pieces) by sending it back in response to yet another offer of a lifetime loan. probably illegal. it whiled away the time. and confirms that i can be scarily bizarre at times and need to get out far more.

i suffered a similar problem, along with Junk mail I also got junk faxes and nearly constant phone calls at home from call centres so i sorted it out using the preference service.

This is free and you simply fill in a form and the hassle drys up. For phone and fax the firms MUST legaly check the prefernce service to see if you are on the list, if you are they a legaly bound not to call or fax you.

with the mail, it isn't a legal service but most of the big firms subscribe to it anyway and I stopped getting about two thirds of the rubbish that landed b4

Just a thought

I too am on the "preference" list with regards to paper mail and telephone.

Now, if only there were a similar arrangement with Spam!!!!!!!

My problem is that I not only get junkmail for me, I get it for all the people that lived in the flat before me.

And all the sh*te that comes for the other flats for previous owners / tenants.

Have been returning most of it "not known at this address" but it doesn't seem to be slowing down!

Gits.

Attach the pre paid envelope to something heavy but will fit in a letterbox, it'll cost their business reply system a fortune if we all did it...

Right, thats it, I'm sending them all the instruction manuals for keyborads and monitors etc that we get here and have to throw in the bin.

I usually fill the pre-paid envelope with the other leaflets that get pushed through the door - the ones for local take-aways, builders, supermarket offers, sometimes AOL cds etc. - something completely unrelated to the original junk it came with.

As for AOL CDs, they can always be sent to http://www.nomoreaolcds.com

I like the idea of sending them something heavy, it couls cost them LOTS of money.

I might send them some of my wife's home made cakes, see how they like em!!

I hope my wife doesn't read this...

I could send them some empty crisp and bisket wrappers, see how they like loads of rubish through the post.
