Where Did I Read This?

Sometime in the last twenty years I read a passage that included the following, as far as I can remember it-

"All mountaineering literature falls into one of three categories: the heroic, the metaphysical, and the couthy."

I think the author went on to cite (respectively) Reinhold Messner, WH Murray, and Tom Weir. Can anyone remind me where I saw this? Almost certainly in something with a strong Scottish connection. Help please! It's driving me mad.

Not to sure, but it might have been in "Mountains of the Mind"??

I'll check, but it was several years ago, before MOTM was published.

Self-zombified thread, to answer my own question.

Most mountaineering literature falls into one of three categories: the epic, the metaphysical or the couthy.  One might see Messner, Murray, and MacGregor as their three respective muses."

...is from the preface to 'A View From The Ridge' by Dave Brown and Ian Mitchell (who also wrote 'Mountain Days, Bothy Nights').

There, you can get off the edge of your seat now.
