hi all wasnt sure where to put this thread but here goes. having recently retired i have £180 to spend from collection of work colleagues, i did at first think about buying some gear but thought maybe i would be better buying something that will last the test of time. so.... am thinking maybe a painting or framed print of a lake district scene/mountain that could take pride of place somewhere in the house. so the jist of this thread is just to see if anyone out there knows the best places to seek such a thing. sorry for ther long story but would appreciate any ideas out there . cheers les.

Nice one, Les. Enjoy it

I doubt you'd get a painting for the money. Treat yourself to a trip out & rummage through the galleries for a print

There are plenty of framed photos to choose from e.g. here

I wouldn't buy a painting...

But that's because my grandad was an artist and I have over 20 of his paintings hanging on my walls. Six of them are Lake District scenes, and one of those was done on request from me. There's no room for any more!

Next time you're in the Lake District, spend time browsing round the shops and galleries. There's bound to be something that will appeal, and at the right price, if only because competition is so intense.

My pal Cathrine does some rather nice outdoor-related ceramics, clicky for her site.  Rather than a framed picture, if you have a place you really like she can do hanging maps, which you'll see examples of in the "wall pieces" section.  The bigger maps would be rather over-budget but perhaps worth getting in touch to see what she can do for what you have.  (the Ulva & Gometra map graces our dining room).

Pete.

If you like the idea of a picture, have a look at the felt prints here:

Focus on Felt

The originals are way expensive, but the prints are in budget and really nice. And the Dales is of course much prettier than the Lakes

You wouldn't get an original painting in a gallery, but you might at one of the exhibitions by amateur artists staged at various places in the Lakes -- Ambleside and Glenridding come to mind. They're run by local art groups and, as might be expected, the standard varies considerably...

Les... can you get yourself to Arnside railway station by approx 10am on Thursday 3rd May? If so, then you could join a 'Sketching and Walking' outing that is part of the Ulverston Walking Festival. The guy running it is called Dudley Clark and he's a great local artist. He's only planning to walk a couple of miles, taking 4 hours, as most of the time will be spent generating works of art. I'm sure you could have a chat with him about 'commissioning' something that might suit you better than buying random artwork off the shelf.

Why limit yourself to one painting? My elderly parents are just starting to build a collection of DVDs of places in the country that they can't get to any more. Then they can look at them and admire the views and scenery for years to come. So £180 would buy a lot of DVDs!!

Alternatively find a photo you really like e.g. from Dave Brown's walks diary or from the OM gallery or somewhere ask for a copy and get it made into a canvas print. That way you can dictate the size of the picture and the type of frame used.

thanks major sommat else to consider, thinkin about photos i have some of my own that i would like to enlarge and maybe get a print onto canvas just not sure if they would not be good enough to stretch onto a canvas if you know what i mean, they look great to me but its just a point and click camera so not sure if it would work. also have found a couple of websites that do good quality prints so maybe i will go down that road, cheers for the input.
