Has anyone else noticed that since Jon has been on holiday the erstwhile Richard Gear hasn't answered a single question.

Is this a coincidence or am I just being a cynical old Hector??

John, I can't believe you're saying this...

Richard Gear is a real live person.

It's just that he takes his holidays when Jon does. A bit like a workers beano...one out on hols...all out on hols!

How could someone with THAT much gear knowledge be ficticious?

It's the only way they can spend time together away from the harsh judgemental eyes of society.

That's a fair point...

True true....Richard Gear exists I tell you

It is a not-too-well-known fact that Richard Gear is in fact a woman.

S/he writes 'WE have tried' not 'I' because s/he is tring to hide the factoid that s/he is having a mad passionate affair with J D and they have run away to Spain together.

Either that or it's Jon "dressing up" (ooh-errr) again.....

I utterly refute any suggestion that I am in any way not a real person. I mean, look, there´s my head in the picture. What more proof do you need. Yes, Jon is in Spain, but not with me, I´m actually down in Patagonia living it up and checking the relative breathability of various baselayer undies. That´s just the way I am. I´ll be back soon though.

Yours very really

Does this mean that recenty asked questions will in fact be answered ?
I'd almost given hope and help is desperately needed . Is there hope ?

It looks like Richard (haha) spends more time testing than answering if his recent output is anything to go by (nice work if you can get it).

What was the question, as we've got him to respond on the forum now he may answer you here...

John ,
My question was related to one man backpacking tents . I bought my tent ,Vaude Spider 1 weight 3.1 kg , when I first started backpacking and it's been great , plenty of room , easy to pitch very robust .
The problem I've always had whilst backpacking is that I carry too much weight (in the rucsac that is) and over the years I have chopped and changed my gear for lighter kit .
As you'll appreciate this is an expensive game and to buy twice is darn annoying . I'm now looking at the tent .
The trouble is I want decent comfort , ie space to cook and store rucsac etc but a low weight , I noticed in one of the reviews (Vaude Hogan) that 3.8 kg was a reasonable weight for a 1 person tent ! , when most of the reviews suggest that 2 kg is the max .
Mine field area this one .

Should have mentioned height 6' 3" I've seen a few reviews where tall folk have had problems with the foot area pushing against the bottom of the tent lining .

Isn't the Vaude Hogan a 2/3 person tent? Not many small tents are under 2kg, and when they are, they're more bivvy/AR than comfort-oriented. There are a couple of old threads which might help: here and here.

Right then, I use a Mountain Hardwear Mountain Wing which Cotswolds the b*$£"!ds are doing for £130!

I'm 6' anf fit inside with room to spare at my head end, the MH tent spec says it's 92" so it should be long enough for you but your face will end up being quite close to the inner fabric as it tapers from the cmiddle (widest) to the ends (Narrowest and lowest). The vestible as the call it is the lenght of the tent, this allows you to put your rucksack at the feet end giving you room to cook at the head end. I only cook with the vestibule door wide open because it is quite low at the ends and I don't fancy being roasted in my own sleeping bag.

It's effectively a 3 pole tunnel tent with one large hoop and two smaller ones at each end so it's not self supporting and needs to be put up fairly carefully so it stays up all night. It weighs 1.8kg according to the blurb and I'm happy with it.

John - what's 15% off £130???
(you know what I mean LOL) Does this make it a 'steal'???

Right then, I imagine Richard Gear haha will be answering a question quite soon now he's back from Sp... Patagonia.

No, but for the sort of questions Ben is probably asking, she may be better than RG.
