I'm quite looking forward to watching the Olympics myself, and I'm sure I'll get a bit of a surge of pride when a Brit gets a medal. But all this stuff meant to show we all have a stake and are in it together (where have we heard that before?) is a bit of a joke imo, and risks putting a lot of people off.

So today was the day - Bonington surmounted all obstacles to carry the torch from the top train station up the steps to the summit. And some other bloke got to take it up Great Orme on the chairlift. And that many roads were closed in Chester for a jockey and some pretend Romans to take it to the racecourse... great!

Meanwhile....

So a big event like that, and from what I saw on TV there were fewer bods on the summit than on a wet and windy day.

Was that due to elf and safety and crowd control or something else

I was on top of Monte Ritondu in Corsica when a guy from Cameroon told me that London had won its Olympic bid. To my shame, I hadn't even realised the city had made a bid!

In less than two months I will have to figure out my Olympic avoidance strategy.

Well, according to the Mash (see Matt's link above) you can self-exile '... to the unpopulated wastes of mid-Wales.'

That it should come to this for him! A far cry from Everest or the north face of the Eiger

That's precisely what I'm doing to avoid much of the Jubilee this weekend. Though I will be part of a beacon-lighting party on Pen y Fan on monday night

I'm happy to take suggestions, Taz - anyone on OM a likely candidate?

Everyone west of Offa's dyke, north of Hadrian's wall or across Irish sea?
