I'll be clear. I think the London Olympics are the biggest waste of tax payers money and probably the clearest con that has been inflicted on this country for many a year.

Many people will disagree with me - you are entitled to and show me any quantifiable benefit which has reached north of Watford gap.

Rant over.

In todays Sunday Times - the Olympic Torch is going to the top of Snowdon on the 26th May. If you were thinking of heading out for a wee walk in and around the area on that day, you may wish to reconsider.

In fairness, the application and selection was made before the recession hit. Whilst I agree that there is a high cost involved and that not everyone benefits from it, I for one find it exciting that the Olympics have come to the UK.

Amen to that, GOF - couldn't agree more!

On the train?

Yeh lets solve the problem of the riots by building an Olympic sized swimming pool?!!!

Billions better spent else where imo...

"They",  the powers that be who are spending all our non-existent billions say it will generate more than it costs - bulls**t. I seem to recall reading just last year that Canada had finally cleared the debts incurred to host the games in 1976.

What about Scafell Pike and The Ben ??

Yes to waste if money, yes to waste airtime etc etc

I could rant on about politicians/egos etc.  Happy for referendums on Mayors in major Cities, but not on a spend that could probably keep the Armed Services in quality kit and food, or spend on free prescriptions for those of us in England, or keep student fees at a lower level -

Someone told me that the organisers need to find beds for 350 a night with the Torch Relay.  I think that is unlikely but the cost £4000000 for stupid torches before paying for all the freeloaders

RANT RANT RANT . back to work tomorrow after a week off GRRRRRR

OH, and dont get me started on the Diamond Jubilee

Hmmm, my quote function seems to have disappeared using an IPad....

Anyway - Kev - nail on the head. They're coming to London. I completely fail to see how I'll get any benefit. I couldn't even get a ticket. The o ly thi g coming anywhere near me is the football, an that's just causing me problems getting to work!

LOL..our headteacher thought it would be nice to have the little kiddies in the primary school bit go and watch the torch as it goes past (the school is on part of the route) only to find...its flashing past inside a car as there are no runners on that bit for safety reasons!

GOF ; I think you are quite wrong to exclude any attempt to demonstrate quantifiable benefit south of the Watford Gap from your challenge.

Is there anything (apart from the Olympics) south of Watford Gap?

How reassuring to see the UK upholding the Olympic ideal so authentically

What about Scafell Pike ...

To truly reflect the Three Peaks Challenge tradition, an Olympic torch-bearer would have to leap out of a minibus parked to cause maximum obstruction, stumble up the hill in pitch darkness with as much shouting as possible, discard a symbolic lager can and sandwich wrapper at the summit, go for a shit behind a rock and ceremoniously scatter the soiled toilet paper to the wind, then twist an ankle coming down and be helicoptered off after unnecessary attendance by an MRT.

Olympics? Bah, humbug.

Between the Olympics and the fact that England are more than likly going to "win the euros" (Im kidding, you lot arent going to get even close) I really dont know if I can own a TV or read a newspaper.

Skip, that's so funny!

Where I live they will be shutting all primary schools at 2pm this thursday as the torch comes through (except my school!) as well as close a lot of major routes...I'm awaiting chaos on a grand scale.

I assumed - as one would - that because the Olympics is about, er, sporting prowess that the torch would be going up Snowdon in the hands of a fellrunner or track athlete. I only wrote the comment above to have a facetious dig.

But it turns out that the bloody thing actually is going up on the Snowdon Mountain Railway! Oh, how very athletic and Olympian. More proof - were any needed - that the whole circus is a risible con.

I wonder what happened to all those big stones that people used to slide down the railway on years ago. If several were transported back near to the summit it might be nice to have a group slide down the tracks on that day Perhaps everyone could wear a "Stuff the Olympics" tee shirt".

I think this just about sums the whole farce up...
