> A recipe for a dull and anodyne forum IMO

No need for it to be dull or anodyne.  You just need to be a bit more imaginitive.

If you met me, you'd know that I swear like a trooper.  However, like most people, I moderate that language when I know that there are people around who might take offence.  And, in an open-access, public forum, there may well be people who will take offence.  And, given that I don't like to give offence, I will moderate my language.

I also don't see the point in trolling, flame wars, or starting fights.  There's enough grief in the world without deliberately going around causing aggravation for fun.

The Windy thread has a long history, and Jon has, I think, taken the attitude that it's the forum's 'anything goes' thread.  But I'd prefer to see the language in it not creep out into the rest of the forum.  Yes; you and I might be big boys who aren't bothered by a few words, but not everyone on the forum will be.

It's really about consideration for others.

And, as Kate has pointed out, OM does have a code of conduct that isn't much different from the walkingforum.

Perhaps....bit if you reduce conversation to acceptable to the blandest common denominator then many will be ennuied.

A bit like the entire table being served the korma and pasanda....some prefer a little more spice.

It's all about a little more tolerance of difference.

I said earlier that one of the joys of OM is the light touch that allows freedom of debate and the sort of language many of us use every day.

Skip, I was on a bird website trying to identify that Chaffinch thing and a few folk left comments/ messages and I left a link in a reply that went to my flickr photo of said bird so they could see it blown up ( so to speak ) and all the messages were removed, I take it by a moderator, not sure why though, unless it was the link to another site ! !, all the messages were identifying the bird !

If someone bans Jon i'll give em £20. I can do that repeatedly at £20 per time. I reckon £100 so far...

And there's proof beyond doubt mods abuse their powers.

I take it all back, let's have a free for all and fight with Gucci handbag.

Thanks for the bump SHH, I missed this thread back in July as I was in Snowdonia for a fortnight's walking.

Just spent an enjoyable few minutes reading through and being entertained by some of the comments.

May be I'll think of something constructive to say myself.

(May be not)
