Aargh! Went over on me ankle in our building site of an extension, its swelled up nicely and I can just about put my weight on it and hobble.
Ive been using ice packs and Ibuprofen for the swelling+ pain relief, and can rest it today.
Here's the problem..I absolutely have to be mobile for the rest of the week. Is it best to strap it up with crepe bandage or leave it be?
Some sites recommend application of heat after a few days..some say keep using ice..I'm confused

And me a Doctor too.......

You shold not be walking on it but you dont need me to tell you that.

Can I assume you have been to A&E and checked its not broken, yes you can walk on a broken ankle in most but not all cases so if you havent been then please go, you would be surprised how many people think its just a sprain.

The most important thing in the early stages of any injury is to let it rest and heal and this will affect your long term recovery, but as a radiographer my job is diagnosis not treatment so i will leave others to offer detailed advice.

In my experience, strapping it up with a bandage or some sort of support helps a lot. Also, the stretchy neoprene joint supports you can get seemed to work really well for me on a couple of occasions when I've done something silly. Hope this helps, get well soon and all that

Also, theres various advice in the buthcer's dog Injuries and Illnes section in On The Hill

RICE

rest
ice
compression
elevation

So strap it and then get it up at every opportunity Mikey even if you have to walk round the rest of the time.

Just got back from Hospital. A bad sprain with strained ligaments. All tubigripped up and told to take it easy for the next few days.
Typical of me to do that on a bit of 2x1 at an altitude of 4m and not at the top of a mountain!!

Probably better to do it at home than up a mountain though, eh
Anyway - Get Well Soon

Hard luck :-( Do try to rest it as much as you can: I've got a permanently swollen and slightly weak ankle from a bad sprain about 20 years ago, because I didn't rest it.

As someone said earlier: RICE.

Chin up :-)

All i'll say is that if you have to go out and about on it also wear a supportive pair of shoes/boots aswell.

And on a similar but not so catastrophic note i have just come really close to doing the same.

Moral of my story dont walk down the stairs when you have your flysheet on them drying out.....Imagine the scene third step down and the siliconed fly gives way between axminster and stocking feet....result me in a pile of bright red ripstop at the bottom. Good news is the fly is ok! Bad news is a bruised ego and arse!!!

I did mine and it took about 18 months to recover properly. It was considerably weaker during that period and more prone to a repeat injury...it feels fine until you go over on it again - then you realise how much weaker it has become.

I'd see a physio for advice on excercises to accelerate your recovery (which I didn't and now wish I had).

PS glad it not broke now REST IT !!!!!!!

I know you say you have to be mobile but move heaven and earth to rest it cos your long term recovery will be affected :-)

Its yellow and purple and measures an inch more around the ankle bone and around the arch than the other foot!!
[On the plus side; its got me out of a trip away with the wife]
Unfortunately it has ruined my New Years keep fit regime of running and cycling and as our garage was demolished today I can't even get a cold beer to drown my sorrows as we have had to cram all the 'essential' items ie food, into one fridge in the house.

Doh.

You need a shed

Tee hee! Got one of them ..its full of builders tools now.
The garage fridge has been relocated to my workshop which I can't get to as I can't drive and the beers there.

What on earth is the world coming to
