Actually... I think Travel Taps might have been the best solution! Instead of endlessly looking for more and more clean water, only to flush it down toilets, they could be endlessly recycling it onto the tourists!

There are endless debates about conservation vs prosperity in Switzerland, alpine valleys residents resent the intrusion from what they consider townies green loonies only there to spoil their enjoyement of their natural resources after centuries of dirt poor living (and it was pretty harsh not that long ago...) and conservationists who see the valley residents as blinded by the swiss francs lining their pockets and despoiling their best asset.  The recente referenrum alluded to in the article was seen as a dagger in the back by urban types who have no understanding of the situation or welcome relief in the building madness, depending which side of the fence you sit on...

the swiss resort is run by professional tourism management and seems to be responding positively to change and development. snowdon is run by a bunch of groups who all have conflicting agendas who generally oppose any change even if they could actually agree with each other. (otters noses, larks brains...)

Zermatt still has the fab Hohbalm pastures that are still wonderfully unspoilt and one of the great walks of the alps.Think there is still space for everyone there. As for snowden the train etc has meant ive never visited.

I am wondering why people are so unhappy about the Snowdon train, yet are happy to go up a similar train in the Alps? Is it because people accept that there are trains everywhere in Switzerland and its a rare thing in the UK?

That's about it I reckon Nick. It never bothers me, it's quirky and a lot of people must have been inspired to go walk up another hill just by taking in the view after a train ride up there.

I remember when Snaefell, on the Isle of Man, was promoted with the following phrase...

"Accessible only by mountain railway"

I'm still waiting for someone to claim the first ascent on foot!
