Just coming out of the back end of the flu, this is the first time ive ever had it,,,,,,what a trip! so i thought that i would pass on my findings to help you though it.

1. if the Doctor offers you the Flu Jab, TAKE IT. I found that when i didnt have the Flu then i didnt need it and refused the needle. Me the fool.

2. Turn off your Mobile phone. People will become none interesting.

3. Go to bed.

4. Get some Benylin (or what very drug does the trick for ye "loosens phlegm, to make your cough more productive" NOW I UNDERSTAND AFTER COUGHING TIL I TURN BLUE.

5. Dont forget to drink loads and loads, if you dont drink then you will wake up every morning feeling very poor indeed. Oh and eat, if you dont eat you get dizzy, we call this dizzyness.

these are my top 5 tips. probebly no good for some people so pick n mix em with your own ideas. or ignore em.

If you have any other tips then post away.

Oh yeah im not a Doctore so maybe you should see one first.

I do have the flu jab as we get it free at work but its not 100%.

My biggest tip for colds and flu is buy some Echinacea from the Health food shop, now dont wait until you are ill because its most effective taken at the "Im not ill today but Im coming down with something and will be ill tomorow" stage.

As soon as you get that feeling take it for two weeks, I used to get 2 or 3 could a year but I never get past the first stage now.

Some bottles tell you to take it as a preventative measure but a herbalist I know says it loses efectiveness and not to do that. ( they are just trying to sell more stuff). Its one of the few herbs that has been through clinical trials and is proved to work.Ensure you get good quality as the unregulated herbal medicine industry has problems with some companies selling low active ingredients stuff.I use Bioforce.

I had the flu jab and then got the flu 3 days later. Figures...

I think by the time you relise you have it, its too late and you just have to see it through.

A Hot Toddy is good. Whisky, honey, lemon and sugar, then add nearly boiling water. If nothing else its a tasty drink.

I recommend lying on the sofa watching the Lord Of The Rings DVD's.

Worked for me a couple of weekends ago anyway. I mean. Bloody Saturday and came down with a flu thing. Where's the justice in that - didn't even need to take anytinme off work! PAH! Not fair.

(I reckon it was Ebola but Mrs F said it was just a head cold type thing, but what does she know? Is she a doctor specialising in tropical medicines picked up from visiting Telford on a cold Wednesday evening? I don't THINK so! Ebola it was. Shrugged it off after 24 hours though. Felt fine by Sunday afternoon.)

My vote goes to Julie for the Echinacea tip; I got nagged by my deal old Ma into getting some a couple of winters ago and now when the throat starts to get even the slightest bit gravelly I normally take some and the cold / flu thing is gone in a couple of days.

Except right now when I'm too crap to remember to buy some and I've had a stinking cold for over a week now.

So I suppose that's almost scientific proof it works, with me as my own control group. Jings!

"Deal old Ma"? Bugger, this cold has turned my keyboard dyslexic. "Dear old Ma"

alex, you had a cold. mrs f was right. good wheeze for the dvd's though. would have to prise the Angel from watching the footie/results on saturday so i must remember not to get ill on a saturday.

if you get flu you really know about it and will probably involve a week off work - or less you are the unselfish type and return to work too soon to share all your lovely germs with everyone else.

had a flu jab once and was off for a week with the worst "cold" i've ever had.

lee's got it about right. GO TO BED - if you can get through a day without being in bed then it probably isn't flu.
buy drugs of your choice NOW! cocodomol (? - fizzy paracetamol & codeine) will kill any pain and as a side bonus may make you fly for bit! echi wotsit sounds interesting (no it isn't a spiney anteater, altough may be interesting if it is -ed) - off to read up about that.

inbetween sleep/collapse/not being @rsed, drink lots of water.

The flu jab reduces your chances of getting Flu by about 80% but they have to guess which viruses will develop and like all geusses its not perfect. Some people have a bad time with the vacine. You are just improving your odds of not being Ill, theres no gaurantee.

After 5 weeks of post-flu horribleness, Bob got all deeply and chestily snotty again so now he's on 'tibiotics. After 2 days he's started to feel human a bit more.

Me, I just feel lifeless, dry cough, sneezing, snotty, sinuses hot. Had this for 5 weeks, too, following a massive 'can't move for several days without needing a lie-down' major flu.

"Doctor" Julie, would 'tibiotics help me, too? Not got a sudden ACUTE resurgence like Bob's got but am thoroughly sick and tired of being UNWELL. I know that 'tibiotics aren't a panacea but what is the solution? Don't want to wait 5 days for a doctor's appt to be told that there's nothing he can do.....

Will no-one rid me of this troublesome after-flu?

<sounds off of heavily-armed knights running along flagged floor towards the doors>.

I dont know Jeannie, it depends if your problem is viral or bacterial. You could still try echinacea. Its not ideal to take it so far in to an illness but it works by boosting your own immune system rather than doing the job instead of it, so it might help. The worst it will do is nothing, ( apart from being a few quid worse off) which is more than you can say for antibiotics. If you get it from Holland and Barret the staff will check if it clashes with any other medication but I dont think that particular herb does.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks Jules. We got some Echin-wotsit today - tabs at half price in H and B!

I think we're both suffering badly from work-related stress, which long-term will degrade our immune systems...so if the echin-doodle boosts it, it sounds good.

Sorry guys, you can ignore all my tips, because ive had a big u-turn and ive been real ill over the weekend. It seems to get worse at night.
NEW TIPS
1. DONT TRY TO ATTENT THE OFFICE PARTY.
2. BOOZE IS A VERY SHORT TERM CURE.

Ive crushed the work force at Snugpak with my Flu.

There was a Butcher's Dog article about this about a year ao. Echinacea is good, but works best once you're ill or getting ill rather than a preventative. Garlic, on the other hand, apparently works the other way round and is a better preventative, though useless once you're actually ill.

The classic advice on training with colds is that if it's confined to the head then you can generallygo out and do stuff, albeit gently, if it's neck and below, particularly if your chest and lungs have copped it, then you should leave exercise well alone.

I can sympathise as I've brought back a nasty cold/cough from Kathmandu and don't seem to be improving much at all over the course of a week. Damn....

Tips for avoiding colds include avoiding sick people, but also washing your hands frequently and keeping them away from your face, eyes and mouth. If you're training hard, your immune system tends to be suppressed for about half an hour or so after you've finished, so lock yourself in a small room and hold your breath...

Get well soon :-)

Jon, you've picked up a persistent case of HAPE I reckon - get yourself down to a lower altitude, quick!
