Any top tips for getting fit for winter? Do you crampon up trees, carry your granny up hills or what? Or do you just ignore it all and hope for the best?

Gym, gym and more gym I'm afraid.

The Cosford microclimate makes it such that it's just plain nasty to go out when at work (during lunch) so it's back to the gym.

Can't do the gym it bores me senseless and I was pretty senseless already!

Running on roads is it for me but I do that in the summer too.

I work on a planned six month programme which combines aerobic training with HRM (mostly running and biking), walking with weighted pack, weight training and recreational exercise (climbing, riding, skiing). I've tried a less structured approach in the past, but you quickly get to a plateau, and it's too easy to cop out when you're feeling less motivated. This is really to get me fit for HA mountaineering, and is almost certainly overkill for pottering around in Scotland, but having some basic fitness never hurts.

I swim quite often for the heart & lung type stuff, then just get out in the hills as often as possible for the rest, gym's bore me, and I always manage to find good reasons for not doing other things........

hmm...well apart from running up n down stairs all day at college, walking up hill hill to get to boots, i find lifting pint glasses seems to help...

seriously tho i found last yr that getting up at 6am n doing a 2hour gyme session before college helped....

its just the getting out of bed bit thats hard!

Brian...Thanks very much. That's really great.

Some good information there, and your pictures of Nepal and the Alps are great too.

I don't. I just eat lots of MaccyDs.

Actually, that's a lie:

I go to circuit training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which is a very intense workout for about an hour and a half. It's good stuff with a good warm up/cool down and stretches. I usually have a 30mins run on a Sunday, and I'm just starting sprint training down at the track on Wednesdays.

I do it to keep in shape, the closest I get to the mountains these days is Pete's Eats

BTW, any ideas why I only weigh 66kg (about ten and half stone, I think) despite being five ten and stuffing my face at every chance?

Not drinking enough beer?

10/11/2002 at 19:51
I think you should/would have noticed a 10% weight gain.

Are your scales broke.....?
20/11/2002 at 10:37
Well I am dropping weight...gone down to 15 1/2 stone now from 17 at the start of the summer holidays... I'm 5'11
