what do people reckon is their favourite scramble and why, I seem to have done a lot over the years, I think my favourite so far has to be Clach Glas & Bla Bheinn on Skye, but part of the enjoyment was the company and the weather, think it's about a grade 3, stunning views of the Cuillin!

keep em to yourself then, see if I care!

Wont tell!
Never been to Skye But I hear tell It be more wonderful than a whisky distillery with no lock on the gate and the security guard on holiday.
Cant do much scrambling these days as there isnt much in the South.
The scramble to get home after work is a favourite though

does that mean "we do it every day so that means we must enjoy it?"

Nope

more like stopping banging your head on a wall.

Just like I feel when I get off the A449!

Hi Dave,The west ridge of Sgurr Nan Gilleon inn Skye immediately springs to mind. closer to home though is the Slab and Notch route on Pillar Rock - short and sweet but guaranteed to get the get the adrenalin pumping. Then there is the Broad Stand which I attemped in July but failed to get further than the second platform (I shall definately be returning for a second attempt at that next year). My favorite scramble to date though has got to be Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag, an excellant and lengthy grade 3 scramble!

Scramble-wise Striding Edge, as it was the first proper one I did, and it was perfectly clear, and empty, and I was with a load of mates, and we then went on to do a 1:1 slope, for about 2 miles, in a peasouper! I know St-Ed is common, but it was a good introduction to it, the next one I did after that was Crrib Goch, which was (for ten minutes sh*t scary, but after that) great fun!

Whoops, should've put spaces...

Aonach Eagach, An Teallach, Parson's Nose on Snowdon is very good, Illiniza Norte in Ecuador for the views, and the mountain in the middle of the Llanganates because hardly anyone has been there and it's a two-day walk in and...

I put some returns in for you Andrew.

Well, have to agree on Blaven, and Aonach Eagach, and Pinnacle Ridge (though personally, I've always found Pinnacle Ridge - the St Sunday Crag one - disappointingly short!).

But how about these...

Dubh Ridge (Skye), not to mention most of the rest of the Cuillin Ridge (PS Fantastic new SMC book of Skye scrambles now out!!)

Cneifon Arete (Snowdonia), particularly if you choose a nice easy climb to approach it

And, though it's possibly just above the scrambling grade, the A'Chir ridge on Arran. Fantastic! (It's described as a mile and a half of moderate to V Diff, depending on the route you choose....)

jake's rake is pretty cool. (does it count as a scramble?) However for variety Tryfan wins for me.
16/10/2001 at 13:49
Jake's Rake's definitely a scramble - the direct finish is interesting when it's iced and you don't have crampons. Don't ask how I know etc.

Its also interesting when the girl in front's trousers keep falling down due to a dodgy safety pin. I think she eventually saw the funny side of my running commentary.

Bristly Ridge onto Glyder Fach is always fun in scary kind of way.
Also a few memories of Sgor Iutharn onto Geal Charn (opposite Ben Alder) from last year.

Mate of mine did A'Chir when we were there last September (2000) and I didn't...he gloated about it for the rest of the trip there, the B&^%$rd!
18/10/2001 at 21:07
there's a ridge in Andorra I've been reading about which is supposed to be like the Cuillin, but six times longer!!!,
is there a Staffordshire splinter group startin here?, why does the 449 attract so many hillgoers?
18/10/2001 at 21:51
Had a play in Red Rock Canyon, Niel, but it was just too damn hot to enjoy it! Went in July 1998...So dry AND hot! Had to abandon the walk and go back to the casinos...

As a mate of mine fom Vegas said "Whether you bake a turkey or roast a turkey...It's still cooked!"
18/10/2001 at 21:53
And the A449 is a brill road-it brings me home from work! Apart from going through Penkridge at 8 o'clock in the morning when it reduces itself to a crawl and I can never get a parking place outside the newsagents for a Guardian...What was the URL for that roads site again???
