Best campsite in the Lakes

Because...

...I want to go camping there again.

I went this weekend gone and had to stay at Linefitt (Limefit? can't remember) Park, £13 a night per TENT. 'Had to' as Andy insisted and his girlfriend (the only other) meekly follows him everywhere. Andy likes the shower block (?!). It was also no singles/noise after ten/fun. OK I'm single but I blagged my way in ('she's joining me later(!)').

Now I reckon there must be other campsites, with decent showers and loos, which don't cost the earth. I'm looking for something in the Amblesideish area (fairly central, anyway). Any ideas?

Langdale National Trust campsite isn't too far from Langdale, costs I think about £8 for a tent and two people, gets extremely crowded but is handily placed not only for the Old Dungeon Ghyll and New Dungeon Ghyll pubs, but also for for the Langdale Pikes, Bowfell, Pike O'Blisco, Crinkle Crags etc

Facilities are good, although another web site's forum says it's run by Nazis, they must have been on leave when I last camped there in January cos I didn't notice them.

Er..that should read 'not too far from Ambleside' - arse!

I like the site in the Duddon Valley, but that's miles away... There are three sites around Great Langdale, all get a bit overwhelmed.

The Duddon Valley site, near Seathwaite – the Duddon one – is great. Relatively quiet, ten minutes from a nice pub, beautiful scenery. Basic facilities, but what the heck. Also quite like the one at Patterdale, righthand side of the road as you head north, by the Lake. Can get a bit midgey, but nice enough. Not that keen on the Sykes one further up the Pass, always feels a bit industrial to me.

Bascially, the further you get from Ambleside and Windemere, the quieter things are. Duddon is still bearable at bank hols when places like Langdale and Wasdale are overwhelmed.

Second Simon K's vote for the NT site. Really good facilities (inc drying room).
Normally use bunkhouses now (wussy friends, don't like camping in the rain!), so not got any other suggestions.

Sorry.

Ah ha. Thanks guys. NT is a fiver less than LF so quite a lot better.

Keep 'em coming!

The Wasale NT site was not overwhelmed at Easter, as the wardens strictly limited the number of tents.

I think they limit the number of tents, rather than people, as they were frantic on Friday evening recounting them.

Bugger if you turned up after Friday lunch however, as it was full until the rains on Sunday arrived. The nearest tent to ours was probably 10 metres away.

£9 per night (two people + car).

Hmm prob with me as I'm usually on my own in my tent, with Andy and Hazel in the other, so I end paying twice as much as them each. Hence me trying to find cheaper but still decent sites.

I could go in the hikers bit but we like to be next to one another. Looks like I'll have to carry on trying to get Dawn to sleep with me.

Just read that again. I meant sleep in the same tent!!!

If you're still looking for a campsite in langdale, have you tried Thrang Farm (I think thats what its called) in Chapel Stile? One small toilet per sex, no showers. Lots of flat, sometimes very wet, grass to camp. £3 per person and £1 per car. Near Wainwrights pub which does good beer!

Yeah that's the type of site we want to avoid. A decent shower block and loos but not silly money prices is what we're looking for.

Thanks for telling us about that one though Tim cos 1. we'll know to avoid that one and 2. it's interesting to hear what's available

A charging per-person site would be good though as it removes the advantage Andy & Hazel have over poor old single me

Gonna be triky to find a commercial site like that I reckon. If your tent takes the same amount of space as the next tent with 2 people in it, they're gonna want to charge you the same.

The problem is that simple economics means that most sites with good facilites charge more - that's the point of providing better bogs, washing facilities etc, it means you can ask for more. So, most cheap sites have basic facilities and most expensive ones have better facilities. The absolute pits are the ones who have crap facilities and charge a lot as well, but there aren't many of those around.

Personally I'm not that bothered about lavish washrooms and bogs, though I'm not objecting to them per se. As long as there's running water and it isn't too sordid, I'm reasonably happy. Oh and there has to be a pub nearby.

Maybe we should add a campsite section to the consumer review section? Any thoughts?

ps: flat ground and an absence of midgies is also good

Accomodation review, with a link to the wesite (if available) would be an excellent idea.
Could be limited to Campsites, hostels and bunkhouses.

Quick, get it sorted out cos I'm looking for bunkhouses or hostels in the peak district for June!

I was actually going to email you Jon and suggest adding campsites to the personal review section!

People often ask about other people's knowledge of specific areas, so it would be very useful.

Do it!!
