Boot damage

Yesterday, my son returned from 5 days of walking, scrambling and climbing in Snowdonia. The almost new Meindle Nepal Pro boots I recently bought him have some deep cuts and gouges in the toes. The cuts are at least 2mm deep, but don't appear to have gone right through (boots were dry inside, even when I dunked then in the sink to brush and sponge away the mud. The Gronell waterproofing (silicon) cream I had treated them with has done its' job and the only part of the boots which wet out are the toecap areas. They are now drying out nicely on the patio, so once dry, what should I do about the cuts? Close 'em with superglue; fill 'em with the silicon cream; hot-melt some beeswax into the cracks? Some ideas please (preferably backed up with practical experience of the results).

I've never done anything special with gouges - just a good rub with Nikwax or whatever your preferred brew is. They shouldn't be a problem if it's just the toecaps - not much flexing there to increase the damage.

Superglue doesn't sound like a good idea!

Wow - you should get let Meindle know that your son would be the best guy for testing and trashing their gear...

I bought a pair of Meindl Burma GTX Nov 2003. I treated them with Nikwax and then wore them when I did the Coast to Coast Easter 2004. They got soaked when I went knee deep in a bog and took 4 days to dry out. They cracked where the toe flexes and as I didn't think this was right sent them back via Field & Trek to Meindl. They refused to do anything about the boots because they said I hadn't protected them by using Grangers or Meindl wax. The cracks are still there in spite of me now using Grangers. I'm not impressed and guess whose boots I won't be buying again.
I've read that others have had similar experiences with Meindl boots.
Could they have had a bad batch of leather?

I had the old grey coloured Meindl Supercracks, mid '90s?. I never went near them with treatment and when the sole wore out they went on the guy on bonfire night !!
The leather never cracked despite my harsh treatment, although the sole was quite stiff and might have minimised the flexing of the uppers. All I did was wash them when I came home and dried them slowly.
JYC had a pair of Borneos and they were like a D-Day seafront after a day on the hill, so maybe it's a leather thing between grades of boots, 3 or 4 season etc.

Could be. My boss has a pair of Burmas and like you he never treats them with anything and his show no wear marks or cracks either. Another colleague has a pair of Lhotses which fit him straight from the box whereas it took ages for my boots to be broken in. Must be my luck and feet!
