Garmin eTrex h data cable

I have this GPS and I want to transfer routes from my computer to the etrex unit.

I want a cable that will work equally well on both a PC and a Mac. Can you recommend one please, the cheaper the better, provided it does the jon.

Alastair, there are some good threads about this on this forum. You're probably best to buy a proper Garmin cable, some of the non Garmin ones don't always work if I am correct.
I sold my Etrex H and got an Etrex Legend, less faffing with cables!

It depends if your computer has a serial port. Most recent ones don't, so you will need one with a usb to serial converter built in. The ones with a USB plug should work on both Mac and Windows.

I got one from eBay. Make sure you get the right one, the H has a very non standard serial connector. You can either get one that has a standard 9 pin serial plug at one end and buy a separate USB to serial cable, or get a cable that has the converter built in. There used to be loads on eBay, but I can only find a few now.

They should work. The "new GPS CABLE for GARMIN ETREX H" should be fine as it's just a matter of wiring the plugs correctly. The usb to serial adaptor will probably be OK, but will depend on how well your OS recognises the chip set it uses.

If it doesn't work, I would suspect the usb-serial adapter. You can check the serial cable using a multi-meter.

For a £3 less can get one without power.

What do you think ?

At least it's in the UK and I can get quite quickly for not much more than muy the separate ones which may have a problem anyway.

If you mean the one that's described as "USB eTrex Power & Data Cable" for £19, that should work OK. Don't know about Windows, but I suspect that it will work on the Mac without installing any drivers, as these are already part of the BSD kernel.
