How can I make a link when using Safari?

Links and character styles don't work

I've been using Safari to compose messages on this forum for several years. But the link and character buttons have never worked. But I've just discovered that they do work when I'm starting a new forum topic. Even so, I can't work out how to provide a link to a specific word such as 'here' or 'this'.

There is an updated version of Firefox but it is not compatible with my Mac's 10.4.11 operating system. I still have an earlier version of Firefox on my elderly laptop from which I can still compose messages and make links to websites but it's not convenient to keep switching computers.

I'm fairly sure that I've heard of a free app that will do the job for me when using Safari, but I can't trace one. Anybody able to help?

Sorry to say that I can't offer any help or guidance Hugh, but I share much the same problem. The only difference being that I run OS 10.5.8, so I can hop over to Firefox if I want to use links and characters — it's still a pain though!

I'm running 10.4.1 on a Mac and using version 3.6.26 of Firefox without any problems. We're aware that Safari isn't compatible with the forum text editor, I think it's being fixed for the next version of the forum software which should arrive soon-ish. I'm using Safari now btw.

You can enter links manually though using BB code or whatever it's called:

(URL=http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/forummessages.asp?URN=1&UTN=51415&chklast=1) the text you want to link (/url) but using square brackets instead of curved ones...

the text you want to link

A bit of a hassle, but not too bad once in a while.

Cheers Jon,

I just might keep a copy of that code in a TextEdit file to copy and paste when needed.

test link to Latest Posts

That didn't work at first, but, when edited to comment, seems to have inserted the link correctly...

[edit2] I used the 'old skool' HTML 'anchor' tag to insert a link (google it).  This initially appeared as plain text, but when I edited the post, the link formed correctly.

Hugh: try writing a post, and then using 'edit post'; this seems to use a different dialogue box to 'compose message'.

Thanks, CP, it works!

Thanks, too, to Jon. I don't know ow it happened, but some time ago my version of Firefox suddenly appeared blotted out with news of an update. So I dutifully pressed the button only to be informed that the latest version was not compatible with my version of the Mac operating system. Try as I would, I could not get rid of of that wretched message on the screen. With the information Jon supplied I googled the version I required and was able to download it, and it works perfectly.

I'm very grateful to you both!

Hugh
