repairing waterproof jacket seam

Hi,

 The underarm seam of my waterproof jacket has split (about a half inch split right on the seam). Can I just sew this up like I would any other piece of clothing or does it need to be repaired in a special way?

If its under the arm you could just sew it, or use 3 layer seam tape [iron on with low wool setting] from Point North...search for seam sealing on web site
