Alta Via 2 (Dolomites), is it essential to book?

We're planning to walk the Alta Via 2 from mid-July to mid-August this year, starting from Innsbruck and finishing in Feltre. I'm hoping this route is like the pilgrim walks in Spain in that they won't turn you away if they're full, but I get no indication either way on this from Trailblazer's excellent but ageing guidebook. OK I can book, but how far ahead would be wise? We don't know our walking speed and don't like to be locked in too far ahead, in fact we don't like to be locked in to a booking at all if we can help it. But it looks highly unlikely we can offer to pitch a tent outside the rifugio as camping is banned in the national parks. Would bringing a mat help if the rifugio is full but they are willing to take us in?

When I did the AV2 in 2008, I reserved ahead for my first 2 nights, and from there on did not reserve at all. In some rifugios I even got a room to myself. There was one place I remember being very full, it was The Rifugio Puez Hütte, which is close to Selva di Val Gardena.

Thanks for that. Which month did you walk? I gather it's a very short season.

July. Had some snow and storms to begin with, but the last few days were scorching hot.
