Andalucia walking

Flying in to Malaga in mid-November

I'm going to Andalucia in southern Spain on Saturday. Got a hotel and car booked for the whole week so I'm looking forward to some nice day hikes and sight seeing. Any recommendations for places I should go?

How's the weather up high? All the weather reports are for the coast. I'd rather avoid any snow.
Cheers,

Granada is a total and predictable must see. I'm not sure when it starts snowing again in the Sierra Nevada. If it's snow free, then Mulhacen and the nearby peaks are very accessible from the ski resort below them.

For on the ground, first hand weather reports, drop an e-mail to my mate Simon who runs a mtb holiday business in the hills north of Motril. His e-mail is: seesimongo@hotmail.com, or check his web site:

for telephone contacts.

We were there in May/June and it was just starting to get fearsomely hot then, by now it should be pretty much ideal for walking in the Alpajurras. Where abouts are you staying? There's some reasonable walking info in the Lonely Planet 'Walking in Spain' book.

Yep, I've got one day set off for Granada.

My base is in Mijas, to the southwest of Malaga.

I didn't get the Lonely Planet book, mainly because the Italian version was a bit of a disappointment. Instead I got the Sunflower Guide for Andalucia and the Costa del Sol. It's got loads of walks to choose from but I'm not sure which ones are nice at this time of year. Also I guess I could get maps when I'm there if there's an area that's not covered by the Landscape guide.

There's a walk to the approach of Mulhacen starting in Capileira. Was that along the lines you were thinking?

Erm, I'm not sure off hand - we somewhat eccentrically dragged mountain bikes to the summit of Veleta, I think. The LP says that the first major snowfall in the Sierra Nevada is mid-October, or later, so that's maybe not such a great option.

Should be good for the Alpujarras though, that really wasn't much help was it. Drop Simon a line though, he'll know what it's like now.

I can't vouch for the walking, but the site-seeing is BRILL! My top recommendation is to spend some time in Seville...a totally awesome place, just lovely! Great bars, great food, all excellent. Fantastic Cathederal, good shops and the locals are all very friendly.

Top tip for those spending any time anywhere in Spain is to expect to eat late in the evening, as most Spanish don't normally have dinner til about 9pm at the earliest.

Thanks for the tip about Seville. Maybe I can make my way there although it does look like a bit of a treck on the map.

The late dinner doesn't sound great. I'd better stock up on snacks then. I'm hypoglycemic so waiting an extra hour or two before eating is a Bad Idea (tm).

Seville is meant to be superb, the other place worth a visit, which is closer to you, is Ronda.

The late dinner solution is definitely, definitely tapas at bars - sit round drinking cold beer and eating snacks while you wait for the restaurants to open. If you're in Granada, there's one called the Europa - just near the square in front of the cathedral-type thing, where you can actually choose the tapas with every order instead of just being given what's next out of the kitchen.

Have fun.

This months Trail Magazine has something about about climbing mainland Spain's highest mountain. It somewhere fairly near I believe. Take a look, but don't commit. It's not a walk, it's a climb. 4 or 5 days worth apparently.

That doesn't sound like my scene at all. I guess I'll just have to ask the locals when I get there.

In un-snowy conditions it's pretty much a walk-up I think, in winter it'll be different fishes in kettles, but then we did drag mountain bikes up Veletta (or whatever it's called) in passably snow-like snow in early June. I think someone at Trail has been doing a bit of self-glamorisation.

Well, I'm off. The flight leaves in 4.5 hours. Woohoo! :-) Think of me when your freezing your toes off.

have a good time...if you go to Seville say hello to the Torre Del Orro for me!

(aka round tower by the river, the view of which was spoiled for me by a rather ugly Macdonalds "restaurant")

Oh, maybe I should tell people that I'm back. The weather was partly crappy but I did get to see a lot and do a bit of walking. Pictures will be coming to my web site one of these days.

Mjausson...your photos are brill. Difficult to pick a favourite.

Some of the photo's of Grenada, remind me so much of Seville, you have made me want to go back. Pity that you didn't make it there!

It certainly looks like you had a good trip.

Glad you liked them. Yes, it was a great trip. I wouldn't mind living down there.
